Please, everyone, if you're using a mail program that uses HTML coding, be
sure to change your settings to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY to this list. If
you're sending and receiving in that mail program, you may not be aware of
it. I'll try to send a private post to those who are and request that you
change your settings.

Also, although I appreciate the friendliness of this list :>), please snip
long posts before you reply if you feel the need to post a response, leaving
just the pertinent data from the previous post.

Thanks for your help.

I "third" the appreciation to Paula. Although I don't write much, I read
nearly every e-mail from this group and find it very useful. THANKS!

I've been teaching Biology courses (Ecology, Marine Ecology, Limnology,
etc.) at Oral Roberts Univ. since 1980. I spent two sabbaticals (1987-88
and 1993-4) doing aquaculture research in Norway - mostly live food
nutrition with rotifers and Artemia fed to Turbot and other flatfish). I've
also done some research w/ Tilapia.

A friend of mine is developing a business interest in starting a hydroponics
unit locally. I pass along selected e-mails from this list to him. I hope
to start contributing more to this list in the near future as we have
questions and experience.

Blessings, John

Barry and I discussed once, using $12 200-4-- GPH marine bilge pumps.
As it happens, draw at ~2 amps at 12Vdc can run off a car battery for a
weekend. For a single tank, it would be a backup alarm consideration w/
minimal investment.

DO is driven up in a variety of ways. there used to be an arguement abou=
t
smaller bubbles being superior "due to increased surface area of smaller
bubbles." Turned out to be impact of a bubble's bursting was the greates=
t
factor. Were a pump like this set to shot water above the surface, to ar=
c
downward and impact the surface, the bubbles and impact would be of perha=
ps a
sufficient amount to save a tank. Several ways to set this up. Sensors,=
 or
constant run with a trickle charger. Electricity fails, it goes for at l=
east
24 hours. Large outfits are better served by means not having economy of=

scale for person w/a smaller setup.

Subject: Filleting Tilapia?

We have some tilapia ready to be filleted but I am ignorant when it comes to
filleting. I did look at some pictures on how to fillet. So I filleted (cut
up, more like butchered it) one fish so far. My question is what do I look
for in a fish. What I saw when I cut this fish is a red line following
along the side of the fish. Is this normal? Also I read earlier in the
list about putting the fillet in a bag and microwaved it. The smell was
mild so I would take it that it was ok. Prior to filleting, I took a few of
my fish and put them into a separate 50 gallon fish tank with a 600 gph
filter and I did not feed the fish for 5 days while they were in this tank.
Is ths a good procedure or am I wasting my time. Please let me know what
you people who raise tilapia do.

Thanks,
Joe Insana

JOE, ny little experence has shown that you lose a lot of weight when purging
that long. I have been told by a person with a lot of experence in raising
Tilapia, to purge i day and take a small piece of one fish and cook in micro
wave for 30 - 40 seconds and then smell & taste. It not satisified try
another day of purging. Then take another sample and you should have a good
quality fish. Lets see what others say.
Bert
