Turtles taste great and are served in gourmet eateries in many parts of the
country, especially in the South. The problem with this is that the turtles
are all taken from the wild and that is decreasing their populations
severely in many places. Thus, the importance of Tims work. I don't recall
why Bennett is interested, but, I am trying to get information to pass on to
subsistance farmers to allow them to raise them for their families.

Jed Brown just received his Ph.D. from the Environmental Research Lab at the
University of Arizona. He used halophytes (plants that tolerate saline
waters) to purify water in a recirculating marine system. He would have
data on how much salt these plants can remove.( brown@ag.arizona.edu) He may
have moved on to another institution. You could call the lab at
520-741-1990. Jim R.

Tim - I've run into a mental block trying to locate my listing of seed
sources (this will not surprise some of you -- my mental blocks seem to come
more frequently these days, sometimes referred to as having a "senior
moment" -- "I've lost my file, and I can't pick it up!), so I'm asking
members to please post those seed company URL's they have so that we might
work toward posting a comprehensive listing. All comments eagerly solicited
as to the benefits and/or cautions you might offer as well.
If you'll review the major US company catalogs, you'll often see products
referred to as "short season". We've found these varieties to generally be
acceptable in conditions such as you describe. The Early Cascade salad
tomato and Sweet Gypsy pepper are two of my favorites.
Do have have specific crops in mind? This will generally bring out more
comments than just for "seeds" at large, but at this point I'd welcome all
the input we can get just so I can finally summarize these sources (and this
time put them in a file where I can actually FIND them the next time it's
asked).

Hi guys, I've been under the weather lately and unable to follow the
e-mails closely. Has anybody mentioned this huge database of Plants by
Mail? Not only does it have a massive list of plant and seed suppliers,
it has individual buyers' comments on their experiences with the
companies.

will it make any difference if I use a clear ie white plastic tank for
tilapia as opposed to a solid black tank? The one I have is a 1050 gallon
tank normally used as water tanks for farming chemical applications. It's
new and is totally enclosed on top with a dome-like structure and a hole,
the top could be cut off without compromising the tanks integrity and cost

OK, I realize someone else probably thought of this already so please
enlighten me. Why don't people raising tilapia feed them red wrigglers if
they are 70% protien as opposed to 40% fish food, are they not complete
protiens or what am I missing here, worms are free, and grow prolifically on
greenhouse scraps, too perfect world?

Say Tim,
I can't comment on worms for Tilapia, But, you gave me an idea about
turtles. You said earlier that they grow quickly on 40% feed. Would they
grow even faster on worms? Any of those subsistance farmers I am trying to
help could grow worms.

no we haven't employed worms as feed as of yet, but i'm sure they would eat
them, they eat raw liver and will fight over it
