William - I had a long series of failed messages to your address (I think
just early this month, but my mailbox is not cooperating today). I hadn't
had any in the last few days, or I would have commented yesterday when you
asked about the hydro list.

So sorry Steve for the delay ,
I take it you are farming tilapia or catfish I am so used to working with
trout that I sometimes have trouble relating.
The reason I mentioned the pond renewal rate is , unless you will be
aerating your pond , this will be the main O2 supply for the pond. Up here
in Quebec people farm mainly trout and the pond renewal rate should be no
longer than 3 days. Flow rate , temperature along with the oxygen
saturation level are what will determine how many fish of a particular size
can be put in the pond ( LIAO equations ). I always use the extremes to play
safe, i.e. minimum flow rate vs. maximum temperature. Of course there are
aerators and agitators which bring up O2 levels but aren't always used.
You can aerate your pond and this will take care of the O2 but if you don't
have a high renewal rate you will slowly be euthrophying your pond and may
have a swamp in the near future.

I've recently had several customer inquiries regarding shipping greens
and herbs via overnight mail service. Does anybody have any suggestions
on cost-effective ways to maintain a resonable temperature for greens
during shipment? I'm aware of coolers, ice packs and dry ice, any other
good suggestions would be very welcome.

There was a very interesting report a couple of months ago on National Public
Radio The Cultivated Gardener, I think. The issue was similar, how do you
preserve green garden produce. The report stimulated a lot of conversation
on the Farmers Market Newsgroup and all of it positive.
In a nutshell it was that the produce be picked, soaked in cool water for 30
min or more, gently dried by patting on a paper towel, and cooled in the
refrig overnight before shipment. Apparently this made a green produce that
looked as good in 2 weeks as it did on the first day. It must be chilled in
the frig protected from air flow that would dry it out but once chilled can
be shipped and then soaked and chilled again on the other end. I think I
have this right anyway.
