Actinomycetes are reported to give off flavor to fish. There's always plenty

of nitrogen in aquaponic systems. Jim R

Dave,

While on the surface your questions appear simple and direct, they are

really quite complex which probably accounts for the lack of response (that

and the holidays, burp).

Stocking densities will vary greatly depending on your system design and

really are more a matter of biomass than fish numbers. I've heard of densities

ranging from .25 to 2 lbs per gallon.

Likewise, crop densities will depend on several factors including fish

densities, biofilter surface area, and specific crops being grown. Tomatoes

require more nutrients than lettuce, for example, and so should be grown at

lower densities.

My own small system is designed with approximately a 1:1 tank to filter

volume ratio with 175 square feet of growing surface per 1,500 gallons of

water. University research indicates potential yields of approximately 55 kg

of fish per cubic meter of water per year and tomato yields of 10 kg per

square meter of growing bed per crop cycle, although I have yet to confirm

these figures.

If you could provide some details about your particular system I'm sure

more discussion would ensue.

                            Happy New Year to all,

                                                Gordon Watkins
