Just think, Susanne, if it works you can dispense with the
airstones...:>

Susanne,
"Tilapia Aquaculture in the Americas", edited by Costa-Pierce and our
friend Jim Rakocy, has a chapter on "Tilapia Nutrition, Feeds and Feeding"
which provides a good overview of protein, amino acid, vitamin and mineral
requirements of tilapia (
http://ag.ansc.purdue.edu/aquanic/was/books/tilapia.htm ). Another good
source of information is "Nutrition and Feeding of Fish" (1989) by Tom
Lovell which has a chapter on "Practical Feeding - Tilapias".
On a related note, what kinds of prepared, commercial feeds are others
using? I have difficulty finding anything other than catfish pellets locally
and I'm looking for sources for better quality feed. I'm interested to know
what others use, particularly brands, protein levels and pellet size. I've
seen some information which rates Silver Cup and Purina as top brands.
Anyone using Silver Cup or know where it can be ordered?
I just ordered some Canola (rape) seed which I'll be sprouting for
tilapia feed. I'll let everyone know the results. I've also been feeding
earthworms from my vermicomposter to my tilapia broodstock and breeding
activity seems to have picked up.
Don't get too hot down there!

Can you do something about this mad email
disease that has caused spam to infect the
aquaponics list?
Sounds as stupid as R13 and R22 freon
destroying all the ozone.
Let's all become vegetarians before mad
vegetable disease sets in.

Thanks Gordon for those leads and the humour thrown in!!
1)Can anyone tell me of other insect that they have had good experience
with growing for feed apart from worms?
2)Does anyone out there have any interesting and environmentally
friendly solutions to the problems of larceny of fish? (Apart from
pitbulls..)
3) Can anyone pass on their experience with the growth of algae,
rotifers etc. to feed their fish stock? Would you suggest this for a
newbie?
I am appreciative of all help in the field, as feeds down here are quite
expensive, and I am not sure that they are not spiked with growth
hormones, as we have less stringent regulations here. We have some very
prolific bean types here, high in protein, and carbohydrates.Gordon can
I read out of your reply that you havent already tried soya? Doesnt that
do well in your part of the world?? Are there any definite no-nos in
terms of things to stay away from, that give the fish a distinctive or
unpleasant taste?
I am thinking also along the lines of insect propagation, as we have
friends down here that dont know a think about contraception. One of the
properties I want to put into aquaponics is spiked with grass lice, the
kind that leave nasty bites on the skin, I thought it was neat, and
free, anti-praedial larceny security!! The villagers living nearby
always greet me looking as if they thnk I were absolutely crazy to even
walk into these lands.... they do kinda get real intimate these
lice..... (One of the best island spring runs there.. in case you ask
why bother :) )
More later as I figure out how to get the lice from the grass into some
entrapments and then to the fish...!!! :)
Sorry to drift from fish , but of interest maybe...
We used to raise chickens as kids and I remember we used to let out the
layers for a "friday treat" to scratch under the coops, as we raked out
all the sawdust that had fallen through the floorboards. They feasted on
roaches, mites, worms, etc. and I remember that usually in the space of
an hour, each layer returned to lay at least one egg. This was the
easiest "doping" trick we knew to get a good dozen eggs for the weekend.
I have been therefore convinced as a child that their are many methods
of natural feeding that are quite beneficial. I have never seen an
eggyolk as reddish-orange as the eggs laid after such a treat as the
chickens laid when being fed feeds which in any case usually contain
colour enhancing compounds.
On a more humourous note, (although not condoning what is involved and
implied) I recently heard a true story of a large fish farmer here who
constantly wrote red due to theft. He got a type of pseudo-shark I was
told, one with sensors and whiskers with a neuro poison, and bred a
few.(any ideas to what this is??) He stocked out his ponds and was most
amused when the hospital admininstrator called him one morning.
Apparently 10 guys wet to seine off one of his ponds, 4 of them, one by
one fell stunned into the water. The others, horrified, took them to the
hospital where they obviously were at a lost to find out what this "food
poisoning" could have been... the guys recovered, swearing that the
owner had gotten a witchdoctor to put a spell on his ponds, he kept his
mouth shut as to the true reason, and his written figures in black
since.---.......
