Feeding of raw meat products (I'm guessing that you are feeding them raw

meat) can cause fouling of the water in a variety of ways including:

*rapid leaching of nutrients from the feed to the water (increasing the

nutrient load that the system has to convert nitrates & such--which of

course increases the oxygen demand)

*filter fouling--if fed as ground feeds they tend to break up quickly in

water and add to the amount of material that will fill (and often block)

filters including exit filters for outgoing water

*oils--if there are no binders to hold the oils in the feed, it ends up

as surface scum which besides being unsightly can reduce the area of

water-air interface and reduce the exchange of gasses (CO2 & O2) between

the air and water

Also, higher protein feed will increase the amount of Nitrogen going

into the system--even if it is all consumed by the cultured

species--will increase the amount of ammonia that your system has to

render non-toxic (by oxidizing to NO3).

Hi,

I know people aren't deliberately sending attachments, however for those

that are considering sending to the list, take this example below:

Johnny wants to send coolimage.jpg which is 12KB to a mailing list because

he finds it funny. The mailing list has 300 subscribers, and Jonny thinks

that nobody will mind because its only 12KB. The list server will need to

send around 3MB outwards. Assuming that the friendly listmaster was being

charged 20c/meg, then he's just been charged 60c for your "funny image".

Just thought I'd emphasise the importance of proper Netiquette even in a

fishy list like this one :). I know I haven't always abided by certain

rules, but I should be quite compliant now.. My sig is only 1 line over

the RFC about signatures, and I never send attachments onto mailing lists.

Subject: Collabrative HUGE Reference

From: Michael Strates

Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 18:05:45 +1100 (EST)

Folks,

I've been throwing this idea around in my head for a /very/ long time, and

thought I'd better suggest this to somebody with the intent of starting up

a project like this.

How would a /huge/ reference on aquaculture, aquaponics, hydroponics and

organoponics go down, written collabrative, say a few pages by each person

on the net, and then tied together and edited to link the documents

together by an editor.

I want to get something like this started, so I ask anyone with any

information on aquaculture in small spaces (say a 40ft x 40ft greenhouse)

to send me all the information they can get (in .txt format)... I'll take

this information, add you to the credits at the end of the document, add

the original document's details to the reference section and then rewrite

the document you've sent to me into a typesetting language so that it can

be both printed in the future and displayed and indexed online.

How many people are interested in doing something like this?

Subject: A new Document!

From: Michael Strates

Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 18:28:21 +1100 (EST)

Folks,

I'm proud to say that, yet again I have another very interesting document

relating to aquaculture in my document archive -- freshly written,

designed and edited by me just five days ago. I'm also happy to say that

the goldfish loved the brine shrimp (I didn't know they ate them!)..

Needless to say the yabbies fell in love with the brine shrimp and broke

out into a feeding frenzy when the shrimp began dying.

Announcing.. a Pop Bottle Brine Shrimp Hatchery for feeding your

.. aquaculture setup, Michael Strates 1999.

This document explains how to construct an easy to use brine shrimp

hatchery out of a 2L pop bottle and some various aquarium parts for under

around $10. Purchasing dried brine shrimp eggs and placing them into the

hatchery for hatching significantly decreases the costs of buying

juveniles.

Just e-mail me with

        send shrimp

In the subject line to get this mailed to you - completely free as

always.. In an effort to get the best free information available on

aquaculture on the Internet, I am /completely rewriting/ several

aquaculture books and will make it available online for zero dollars.

Remember folks, I still have Dave Paxton's Biogas Series and my plans for

a pop bottle methane digester if anyone is interested. Due to the recent

demand for both of these documents, I think in future I will place all the

docs I happen to release on my webpages.

Cheers,

Michael - hope that you're only "completely rewriting" uncopyrighted

If the documents are composed or stored in SGML, they can be easily

converted to HTML, plain text, etc. This is also the ideal format for

sending to a typesetter.

Subject: New System Questions

From: "Joe Insana"

Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 18:40:39 EST

Hi,

I am starting an aquaponics system for several reasons

1) is for teaching my 3 children who are homeschooled,

2)showing the other homeschooled children in our area how plant and

animal life work together

3)and because I myself am very interested in it.

(Not nesessarily in that order)

I have set up a 50 gallon fish tank and a NFT system of 4" pipe with

six(6) 6 footlength pipe that will hold 36 plants and the pump I have

pumps at 200-250gph. The NFT system is set up to gravity drain back to

the fish tank. All of this is set up next to our sliding glass door on

the south side of our house.

I am looking to put in either Tilapia or Yellow Perch(more popular fish

in North Central Ohio) and on the plant side some lettice, basil, and

other mixtures of vegi's.

My questions are related to the bacteria. Do I need a separate area for

a bio-filter or do the plants roots give a place for the bacteria to

grow? How big does the bio-filter need to be? How fast would I need the

water to flow through it. Should it be set up before the plants?

Thank You

Joe Insana

Hello,

I'm afraid to tell you that Aussie Yabbies, my previous supplier of all

things craylike has vanished. I called them today +613-9331-6197, and a

rude man answered the phone and told me the equivilant of "they're gone,

so [expletive] off and let me get on with my business".

Does anybody know anywhere I can now order yabbie/redclaw eggs that will

send to Melbourne. If they're in Victoria, I'd be quite happy to go and

get them. I'd like to expand my system to include redclaw as well as

yabbies.

Anyone's help would be appreciated.

I will "draw" on copyrighted material for references and rewrite each

chapter in a different way - modifying, deleting and adding information as

appropriate and not in a way which resembles the original book, nor

include specific exclusive information that the book contains.

People write reports based on the contents of books, so why can't I write

an aquaculture book based on copyrighted references? A legal insight on

this would be helpful.. If I land up in court, I'm under 18 so I really

don't care that much.

Could you elaborate more on this raft system?

Why do you suggest such a deep system?

Do you provide additional oxygenation to the nutrient solution?

What type of plants have you grown with this system?

Are you using rockwool in net pots?

What type of liner are you using?

Thanks,
