Galvanized tanks are not the best to raise/or hold fish in because of the
gal. finish has zinc which is toxic to fish and after a period of time
salt will eat it up bringing on rust. You can sandblast/or acid treat,
then paint but that's going to run the cost back up on the tank. Hope this
helps--Ken (Talapia Farmer in Henderson,
Texas).---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ken, What you say about the galvanized tanks is true,I just thought I would
tell him about it.I don't know if it would be economically feasible or not,
but it would be a lot less labor intensive, and it could either be coated or
have a liner. By the way do you raise Tilapia for food or to sell Fry and
Fingerlings. I would be interested in hearing about your operation, that is if
you don't mind sharing about it. Thanks Ken # 2

10-4 on that galvanized tank URL, Ken. Come back. I would like to check it
out.
Did you say 14 feet deep? Now that's interesting. Set a diving board on
that bad boy.
By the way, there are a number of companies that provide plastic liners for
steel tanks and big ponds, etc...Let's see here.....Accessing database....
Yunker Plastics, Inc. P.O. Box 190 Lake Geneva, Wisconsin 53147 USA phone
414-249-5233 Fax 414-249-5239. They sell the "Aqua-Weve liners made of
woven reinforced polyolefin fabric. Ask for free samples.
Reef Industries, Inc. P.O. Box 750245 Houston TX 77275-0245 phone
800-231-2417 713-507-4200 Fax 713-507-4295 They sell the Permalon liners,
which are "alloyed" or laminated high density polyethylene membranes. One
of my buddies in pond lining avoids permalon because he says it delaminates
after some time. Others swear by it.
DLM Plastics 1530 Harvard Avenue. Findlay, Ohio 45840-1737. 800-444-5877
Fax 419-423-0849. They provide flat sheets or Custom-fitted to your
application. 20 or 35 mil black fish grade PVC
Remember Protectk(sp?) product I mentioned in an earlier post? Here is
another liquid liner source...C.I.M Industries Inc. Peterborough, New
Hampshire 03458. 800-543-3458. Fax 603-924-9482. They make a tough
urethane rubber that comes in a can, which is UL approved for potable water
contact and "fish safe"
Ringger Foods Aquaculture Division P.O. Box 40, Gridley, IL 61744 Phone
309-747-2152 Fax 309-747-2243. They can custom make flexible 30 mil PVC
liners to a wide variety of shapes and sizes- "black or aqua blue
available". They also offer galvanized corrugated steel rings from 18
guage to 10 gauge.

Welcome back Ted, and thanks for the liners/coatings info.
Wanted to mention that I have an updated catalog/price list from Polytank.

Aquaponikers,
Many of you probably already have a greenhouse of some size, or are in the
planning stages. Because I am a "qualified industry grower" I receive a
couple of free subscriptions to trade magazines that you may find of
interest.
GMPro (Greenhouse Management & Production) is "The magazine for the
greenhouse growing professional". P.O. Box 1868 Fort Worth, TX 76101
817-882-4120 800 434-6776 Fax 817 882 4121 or http://www.greenbeam.com.
David Kuack is the editor. He sends out a periodic email message to
interested folks- that is where I came up with the tomato article, the
infamous Salmonella in alfalfa sprout seed article, etc., that I forward to
our group on occasion.
Another is "Greenhouse Business- The News Magazine of Profitable Growing"
Find them at http://www.greenhousebiz.com. or P.O. Box 698 Park Ridge, IL
60068-0698. Tel: 847-823 5650 Fax 847 696 3445.
If you grow plants in a greenhouse of whatever size, I think you are
probably a "qualified industry grower", so check it out. There are some
pretty good ariticles and product information in these publications.

Sorry, Alejandro, not trying to single you out, but can someone with more

This creates a time-consuming problem for me in order to eliminate them from

Is there a way for the sender to change settings to eliminate this, or will

The Chocolate Hybrid tilapia is one of Mike Sipe's named crosses between a
hornorum male and a nilotica female. I tried breeding some from his stock
but due
to imcompatibilities all of my females were killed before they bred. I now
have a
separate line of niloticas and have two fertile females running with my male
hornorum, just waiting for nature to take its course. I'll let you know how it
progresses.
The cross is supposed to produce a higher yielding carcass, due to the
hornorum's influence, along with faster growth and better cold hardiness
from the
nilotica. And the fry should be all-male.

Subject: Māche report
From: Adriana Gutierrez
Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 14:20:31 -0500
Hey Ted,
Welcome back. I thought I'd report back on my experimental
māche. On 12/19/98 and 12/27/98 I seeded māche, also known as
corn salad, feldsalat, etc. approximately 2" apart in my perlite
drip system. The plants are beautiful, they are rosettes about
4" tall with 4-5 pairs of leaves. I think it's time to harvest
them but since I've never grown it I'm not sure. I need to get
my Swiss-Mexican chef over to look at them. As you can tell,
they grow slooooooowly. After about 5 weeks I started to get
serious signs of nutrient deficiencies (yellowing of leaves with
veins showing) and pest problems. I dumped my nutrient tank
which had Pureblend organic nutrient in it and started over with
no improvement. About 2 weeks ago I switched over to my
commercial nutrients from the greenhouse and within a day the
plants greened right up. So much for Pureblend...
Other than the long time to grow out the plants have done fine.
We've had highs in the 70's for most of the grow-out time. Next
I will try to replicate the results as the warmer weather
comes. One thing which definitely speeded up the germination
time was to wrap the seeds in a damp paper towel and put it in
the refrigerator. Those seeds germinated in less than a week
(which is good for mache) and now there is no discernable
difference between those plants and the ones seeded 9 days
earlier. The seeds which were placed in a damp paper towel in a
warm place did not germinate at all.
When I harvest I'll report the yield per square foot.
Happy growing!
Adriana

Michael, if it were any other list, I would probably stick with a more
peaceful approach but I don't know what it is about this list... I have
NEVER seen this many unsubscribe requests posted to any of the many
other mailing lists that I participate in. And it is not like our
gracious hosts don't provide this information enough.
I am almost inclined to set up a special filter on my mail client that
sends back to the sender a long flame form whenever they post such
requests to the list (private reply, obviously... don't want to bring
more CRAP on the list).
