I have a small aquaponic system set up in the school were I teach. It is in a
showcase so the school community can see it. The problem is: because the
showcase is closed up, the water temperature in the tank approaches 90 degrees
F by the end of the day. When the grow light is off from 9:00pm to 6:00am the
temp. drops to about 80 degrees F. I had goldfish in the tank, just for looks,
but was afraid they were going to cook and removed them. Q: is there a species
of fish that can survive these high temperatures? If so, were can I get some?
Also, the tank is round, has a clear window, and approx. 30 gallons, I have it
set up so the pump creates a whirlpool type current. The goldfish seemed to
struggle while swimming in the strongest current (in the window, outside edge
of the tank). Is it detrimental to the fish if they are swimming in a swift
current? The pump was timed for 1/2 hour ON, 1/2 hour OFF cycles.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Tom.
