Ted,
For a brief explanation see http://www.arkal.com/ There are lots of other
links on Yahoo. I bought mine 20 years ago from a local dealer so have not
researched it recently.
I irrigate from a clear water river and pump 50 gpm through mine for 6-8
hours between cleanings. I think mine is either 150 or 200 microns. I've never
had emmitters plug. If used in systems with a high load of suspended solids (ie
aquaponics) prefiltering or settling would be necessary to remove the bulk of
the solids or else frequent flushing would be required.

RE: Gordon's suggestion: You can get used metal pressure
tanks from water well and plumbing companies.
They will usually be happy to let you have all you want due
to most landfills requiring them being cut open before they
will accept them and this kills profit for these
buisinesses.(For example out back of our business we have
around 50 of the sizes Gordon referred to or larger.)
These are designed for potable water in the first place but
still should be rinsed and sterilized with a stout (100 to
200 PPM minimum strength) bleach solution for several hours
due to various bacteria strains that can cause problems.
You can easily cut them with a cheap sabre saw with a sheet
metal blade you can borrow, buy or rent.
I usually buy several blades and use gloves, eye protection
and ear plugs too.
Some of them will have threaded plumbing fitting holes you
can use for filling or drains or whatever.
Marc

I forgot to mention that there are typically two types of
pressure tanks, "permanent bladder/diaphragm" and
conventional. The permanent bladder type are a pain to open
due to internal baffles and the bladder or diaphragm itself.
The conventional type of tank usually has no internal
baffles or membranes and is easier to work with.
