Phew, Ronald! I thought it was something I had said. :>) The silence is
deafening, I've had nothing since last Thursday. Is it just that all of
you northerners are having a bad case of spring fever that is taking you
away from the web?
For those of you in warm climates, can you share any tricks to improve
germination of lettuces now that our daytime highs are consistently in
the 80s and above?
I'm also in search of a lettuce variety that will come up red in
southern climates under glass.

Adriana,
When I lived in the tropics I would germinate lettuce seeds (assorted =
varieties from Johnny's) in an air conditioned room, then move the =
seeding trays to an outdoor screenhouse. Just watch the moisture =
level in the media while in the air conditioned room. Good luck!

Thanks Mark, I'll give it a try.

You could put some clear or white plastic sheet over it until you see some
germination.
The plastic holds the moisture next to the surface. The heat from the sun
helps to turn the water to vapor. The seeds absorb the vapor more readily
at the elevated temps. I started pepper seeds by dipping them in boiling
water for a few seconds and soaking them for 2 days. The peppers germinated
in ten days. Normally they take about twice that long.

> Hello yall
Lets get the ball rolling here. Has anyone been sucsessful in starting
soft wooded
cuttings in gravel growing beds. I'm esspecially intersested in hearing
from Adriana
with the 3" deep growing beds. How long would you leave them in before
transplanting to a potting mix.
Thanks
