Hi Ted,
I suspect you can skip any tests of humorlessness.
I'm sure
most will agree, we enjoy your posts much more _with_ the humor. ;)

Hi,
I was hoping for some more help. I am constructing a low-cost
greenhouse with trenches around the perimeter to grow tilepia and organic
vegetables, in vertical structures made out of 2 liter plastic pop bottles to
hold the plants, with tubing going thru the bottles to the fish water and
back again. The tubes will have little perforations to water the root balls.
I need to buy a solar pump with battery.
I am trying to be a model for low-tech sustainability. I am under a
non-profit and am working to create community food security. Also, the
project is developing an ever-improving list of low-tech ideas/methods to
share over the internet to help individuals become relatively
self-sustainable before 2000 and to be a model for their neighborhoods. My
website, which is awaiting volunteer webdesigners to fix to make it "truly
effective" is
http://bagelhole.hypermart.net/
.
My take on y2k is that no one can tell what is going to happen, but the
possibility that it could be big is not remote enough to ignore. I think
there is a lot of denial around.
I am a little bit fearful that my efforts may not be successful. I am hoping
that you might have a moment to respond with a little guidance. I still need
to know where to buy the tilepia, which type, which size (need to be ready by
1/1 2000), whether they all need to be male, and how long it usually takes to
get them. My trench is roughly 22'x 2'x 2 1/2'. I intend to cover the
trenches with a heavy plastic. I'm not sure what to feed the fish - pellets,
worms, and/or algae (if that grows in the trenches). Whether or not I will
need a biofilter, I guess a timer for the pump ( how large a pump, and which
one). How long it takes to get the fish and who is the best to order from.
As you can see, I am a beginner with a time consideration. I want to be a
model so that others can do the same thing, in the Bay Area (San Francisco),
and elsewhere over the internet. I would be happy to credit you and hope that
you will have the time to respond. Thanks for your consideration,
Tom Osher

Hello Tom,I'm sure your cause is a noble one, wanting to teach people how to
become self-sufficient,in the event of a crisis, but at this late point in
time,(less than 5 months),it seems unlikely that you could
design, constuct, learn how to operate and produce and then teach
unknowledgeable people how to survive on this type of system. The following
reasons being:1.It takes a lot of trial and error,to be productive.2.It
takes time to become proficient, probably longer than the crisis would
last,if it were to happen.3.The urban populace will be the ones who would
most likely suffer from food shortages, therefore most of them will lack the
space needed to construct this type of setup.4.The money that would be
expended on a project of this type, would go a long way towards buying can
goods and other staples for survival.5.Opening cans is a much safer option
than crop failure, when you're hungry.6.Food storage will be another
problem,if the power goes out, there won't be any freezers,no power no
manufacturing,=shortage of canning jars.7. Those of who can,be
prepared, share with those who have need, and everyone will be fine. I'm sure
your intentions are well, but are they well thought out? Sincerely Griz
