Following are some comments from a friend who is now in Indonesia and

interested in aquaponics contacts who might have similar conditions, or who

might be close enough (Australia?) to be of help. I'll be happy to

consolidate responses and forward on if anyone has comments, suggestions or

is willing to help with this project.

Carolyn,

De Ruiter is THE premium Dutch seed company. Expect prices to run about

$.45 APIECE for the smallest quantity they ship.

If your CO2 level goes beyond around 1,000 ppm there is a chance of

hypoxia. Over 1,500 ppm is dangerous. However, I quite seriously doubt that

the carbon dioxide levels in a greenhouse would

even get close to that.

To answer your question, a yeast based CO2 production system won't even

come close to the carbon dioxide upper limit.

Can any one help me? I want to try growing bananas by hydroponics. What

might you

suggest is the best medium? and bast system? Does it have commercial potential?

Do help.

Also are there any "mescluners","baby salad greeners" or " gourmet salad

mixers" in

thegroup? I would love to have any infor that I can get as I want to try it

here in

the Caribbean. I am an agriculturist but new to hydroponics so any help I

can get in

baby or mature salad would be helpful. All the best to all of you nad keep

up the

good work. This is a great list, really great town square.

correction: anoxia.

hypoxia: lack of oxygen.

anoxia: excess carbon dioxide causing unconciousness and death.

Hi Jennifer,

I would be very surprised if there were commercial potential for hydro

bananas given the economics of the big Dole operations in Central

America.

I am a "mescluner" as you call it here in Florida. I've been at it for

just six months so I can tell you about the steep and slippery parts of

the learning curve. A number of others in the group also grow mesclun.

Jim Rakocy grows lettuce in a floating bed system in St. Croix.

Adriana, for banana, I am thinking of some of our local varieties to get

some small scale

"semi commercial" production for a small hotel niche for local types.

Where do we start with mesclun. I am setting some seeds in perlite and

vermiculute this

week end. I am planning to try a simple experiment by using the styrofoam

raft and an

aquarium air pump, just to see what gives. My thing is I need to come up

with a system

that is raised to reduce harvest fatigue as I am not going large enough to

want to spend

US$11,000 on an automated harvester yet. Because every thing has to be

imported into my

country I need to use a system that uses low cost materials. If I can mix

my own

solution using what is generally available here, it would also be more cost

effective. I

also have in interest in Keith Robertos aeorponic system and the pipe method

as well,

see at these pages:

1. h ttp://www.futuregarden.com/store/gardens/futurefarm.htm

2. http://www.futuregarden.com/store/specials_squareflos.htm (this one I have

manufacturing instructions from Keith Roberto's Book ) Check it out if you

have not seen

it yet, it is quite good. Please look at them and see if from your view and

experience,

how suitable would any of these two be to the mesclun crop, now that you

have grown it.

Would the yield and value make it cost effective based on the cost of the

systems

presented by Future Garden, or are they just for hobbyists.

Perhaps I could purchase one and then try to build replicas if it works?

Do, pray tell? what are some of the absolute no,nos and pit falls to look for.

Looking forward to hearing from you. If any one has any booklets or notes

please tell me

where I can acquire them. I have probably looked at every page on the web

that has the

word mesclun or baby salad green or gourmet salad greens, but noting beats

the words of

the true grower. hopefully in a month time I will begin to feel like a

"mescluner" I

have lots of info on seed suppliers, Johnny's and Territorial and Ornamental

Edibles and

Shepperds seem to have quite wide selections.

What would help me is what varieties are heat tolerant ( of the various

species that

should be included in a mesclun, i.e. arugula, sorrel, mache, lettuce, asian

greens,

mustards, edible flowers, etc.)

I am in the tropics, what would be the need of a green house over my set up.

Would mill

6 clear plastic be enough? Wont it make it hot? Should I use agrofabric as

an insect

excluder? (Shepperds and Johnny's have it)

Does the crop last long enough for insects?

What tend to be the Florida pests?

Sounds like a LSAT or MCAT exam doesn't. Bear with me, it is the enthusiasm

of finding

that there is and interesting and challenging crop for which I may have

discovered a

niche!! Want to do the desk research, the chat and grower knowledge

research and some

field research before I get really excited!! So bear with the exam.

All of the people that seem to write to this list seem really great, so I

guess I am just

feeling at home.

All the best and I look forward to what little any one can give me.

Jennifer
