Dear Ron,
Thanks as usual, for the great advice. May I ask you which hybrid
you recommend? Also, I think I will need to build a separate pool for
breeding. If I put in cages would that mean the other fish would swim around
the cage and the breeders would be more or less stationary within the cage,
and then how large should the cage be for about as you suggest 50 fish? My
structure, I believe you know, is a raceway (so the fish don't get bored).
Amicably,
Tom O

Sounds like you have built yourself a raceway that will hold 1076 gallons
by your description ) if so you can raise at the minimum of .5 pound of
fish per gallon or 538 fish. My suggestion is to get yourself around 400 all
male sex reversed Tilapia as the main start and around 50 or so Mixed sex to
carry on the breeding when the time comes for replacement.
separate them by cages ( real cheap to make out of scrounged material )
I think I have already sent you my supplier's name and address
Ron

There are several out there. The cross between Aurea and Nile will give you
a larger fillet. Though Mike Sipe at Cherrysnapper has recently come up with
a new hybrid that is supposed to grow out to harvest in 1/2 the time. I have
no experience with this hybrid though. I am not sure he has any for sale. I
know he is in the business of selling breeding stock.
as far as the cage it is really a means to separate your breeding stock from
your same sex stock. You can even partition off one end of your "I" , just
place a divider at the end and that will give them a 7X2X2 area for now.
They will need a bigger area when breeding starts. I use a few of those
small 20 inch high by 8 foot round kiddy pools to house my breeders right
now. They work great and only cost me $12 a piece. I just made sure to put
some foam board under them , it insulates them from the ground but the
biggie is that I have a nice smooth surface for the liner.
I leave on Wed. for Arizona on business to bad you are so far away from
where I will be or I would stop by.
Ron
