I find them in the sand/mud of creeks and rivers.. Some water has 'em, some
doesn't. Are there rules for eating freshwater clams (like for oysters - only
eat them during months that have an "r" in the name?) If Clams are part of your
"clean-up crew" in an aquaponic system (I've used them in my hobby tropical fish
tank for years...), can they be made safe to eat by transfering them to a clean
water tank for a period of time? Yes, - I know that clean water has no
nutrients in it for the clams. How long in the clean water before they are safe
to eat, but before they starve?
I have never heard of anyone eating freshwater clams, although I am sure native
populations did so and probably have wonderful recipes....
Carolyn
