Congratulations Jay! Have you figured out what you're going to grow in
the effluent? Where do you plan to market the fish? Keep us posted.

Clams in ag waters - sure!!! Clams even grow in a number of farm ponds
here in upstate NY. They are mainly carried in by birds (to my
knowledge) as small "larvae in the feces of birds). They prosper in
ponds due to high amounts of particulate matter and sand/mud. Wilkl
they help clean up- - doubtful. We are having a HUGE problem with zebra
mussels here in NY - they have filtered Lake Ontario almost completely
clear (actually, too clear).
Not much inform, ation for you, but my little addition!

I've been forever lurking. I've had a strange year playing with various
forms of hydroponics and have settled on a gravel base (we have a great
free local supply of decomposed granite)system for growing mostly
lettuce(though have some tomatoes, peppers, tried beans and strawberries)
I have not integrated fish into this, but do use chicken manure compost
to make a supplemental compost tea nutrient solution (along with a
commerical product called Earth Juice). I was interested in knowing if
you innoculate your growing beds with some kind of bacteria for breaking
down nutrients or protecting against pathogens (not sure what they do
in aquaponic systems)? If so do you purchase them? Where? how do you
innoculate? Any help appreciated.

Has anyone experienced problems with tilapia scales plugging
the grow bed pipe outlets?
We are not to that point yet as we only have the greenhouse
frame built and ready for covering. I am just trying to think through the
process.
tnx....nick

Do Tilapia lose their scales on a normal basis or can they
for some other reason?

We have had such a problem, but not on a regular basis. Scale loass could
be due to a
high fish density, aggression, or more likely a dietary concer,
Suggestion: When you rinse your grids, purchase a flue brush from your
local furnace
maintenance store. These brushes come in a variety of sizes. A 2" or 3"
brush will
be helpful in loosening all the crud that builds up in the grid pipes!

Conrad,
Can you tell us what Sonic Bloom does and what the benefits were?

Sonic Bloom uses a tape of bird-like chirping sounds embedded into a
soundtrack of classical music, much like those subliminal suggestion tapes,
but you can hear the chirping sound in-between songs. I can see why they
masked the squeaking with music because it could be a painful sound for
those who don't like high pitch sounds like scraping chalkboards.
The music is played for the plants in the morning, and they are foliar
sprayed after about 15 mins.
The idea here is that the chirping sound has been specially developed to
help open the pores on the leaves of the plants and allow the plants to
uptake more nutrients.
This concept is much like nature, where the birds are chirping early in the
morning and inducing the plants to suck up the dew that is on their leaves.
Sonic Bloom sells this tape for a measly $10, and as well they sell their
somewhat expensive brand of foliar spray.
I used seaweed spray with impressive results.

You can innoculate them with.... wait for it, oxygen. As long as your water
is aerated and contains lots of dissolved oxygen, the anerobic pathogens
will not grow.
You could try some biological filter starter if you want some good
ammonia => nitrite => nitrate conversion to be happening. I don't recommend
what others have been doing, however with an anerobic bed/zone which allows
the nitrate => gaseous nitrogen bacteria to grow. I beleive that bad
bacteria could multiply in this zone and spread throughout your system.
Just my own 2c...

Did you feel the change hit your back as you left the store with this
product? This story is as good as reading the ads in ACRES USA. As Jim
Hightower likes to say, "I was born at night but not last night."
However, it is apparently a good method to get a premium price for their
product and tape sales to boot. Bring on the Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

Timing is less than great - working late to get system up before I have to
leave for 5 weeks. 2 in Idaho, and 3 at Tropicana. Time will tell. Trying
to get 1 bed 16' X 4' piped before I leave so we can get the 1500
fingerlings in. We have 3 different types of lettuce, tomatoes, and
cucumbers germinated to get the system kicked off. The rest of the
greenhouse is standard hydroponic with the vertigro system. It will have
8000 strawberry plants, as well as chives, lettuce, and some flowers.
I'll be at Tropicana starting about 20 Oct. Maybe I can see your
greenhouse during the 3 weeks I'll be there.

Hi Gordon,
I am extremely dissapointed as to not have seen you. Worse is that the
fact you didnt reach me wasnt my fault. Hurricane Floyds winds and rain,
(especially the lightning in my area) punched out my phone lines. The
poor tewlephone company guys have been wearing their boots thin!! :>
Hence busy signal.
I was speaking to David A, today. Do you think it would be a problem if
you tell us who and where to contact to have a look at your setup?
We could talk to the local person, and explain our interest?
What do you think?
You have left two very dissapointed gentlemen here..!! 2 down, second
time round.!!
