Aquaponikers:

Thought you folks might appreciate some information on the Doyle =

Thornless Blackberry, tauted as the most prolific berry in the world. A =

recent article in Mother Earth News showcases this variety.=20

Comes from Severtson Farm about 3 miles east of Wylie, Texas, on State =

Highway 78. They claim this variety will produce 20 gallons of berries =

per plant- more than 30 ordinary blackberry plants. (This cultivar was =

highly vaunted at the Agriculture Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, =

Kansas.) =20

To contact the Severtsons or to order your own Doyle Blackberries, call =

888 442-6846 or write to Severtson Farms, 4000 Highway 78 North, Wylie, =

TX USA 75098

Aquaponic applications, anyone? (Hint: Doyle blackberries in =

spring-summer, raspberries in winter- sold to haute cuisine markets, =

restaurants?) Blackberry canes like this could be grown to take =

advantage of vertical space in the the aquaponics greenhouse????

Hi Ted,

I bought one plant from Doyles almost 2 years ago after reading an

article in Organic Gardening and have gotten zip, zero, nada, niente!

Not even a flower. Granted, it has not been in a coddled hydroponic

environment. I've meant to write a note to OG asking them to request

feedback from others who bought these berries on the basis of the very

favorable article that they wrote to see how other's real-world

experience compared to mine. The 20 gallons per plant is after 3-5

years so don't expect to make millions right away. At $18/plan they are

quite an investment.

It also produces 50' of cane per year so be prepared for some major

trellissing. Perhaps it's a good variety to plant around the perimeter

of a greenhouse, inside or out depending on the climate. I should take

a cutting of mine and put it in hydro to see how it performs.

Hi Adriana...Thanks for the feedback....Hmmm.. well, this is interesting!

I have not bought a plant from these folks, but..... it seems to have been

validated from independent sources....

But, because of your report, I will proceed with caution with landscaping

plans at my new location, where I was considering planting a few of these

plants outdoors on a trial basis.

Ted,

I would try a few in hydro to see how they do. I think they need a very

regular watering and fertilization schedule to be happy, which would be

fine in a commercial hydro environment. Unlike my greenhouse, my plants

at home have to meet my criteria of "thrive on neglect".

Si, Si.

This is what I must thrive on my own self.

Thanks, Dale!! I think in making our farms sustainable we need to use

everything possible to bring things as closely in line as possible as

CreatioNature does/did. Let Costa Rica be a lesson!!

I got a mushroom manual last week!! Looks like something else that could

be tied in considering the grass clippings from around the tanks as

wellas lawn space that I guess many of us have...?

Another alternative I have been looking at to keep around the tanks low

is simple... sheep!! :>

Such a pity, and Im sure using a sustainable approach such as reed bed

treatment, aquaponics or huge growbeds in virtual ponds of sand could

have done the trick.!!

Let us take this as a lesson!!

This shows what a lack of partnership can do. This industry, partnered with a

diversified ag base could be kicking major butt with those kind of raw

materials.

Instead we have unknowns confronting environmentalists confronting a corporation

confronted by a court. Where's the agriculture in that?
