A news radio station here in western Washington, Puget Sound
region, this last week aired a news segment of interest. A person was
quoted, who said that a new salmon hatchery would be built here which would
include a greenhouse, on-site, where the water from the hatchery would grow
plants and filter the water.
"This amazing new technology should be completed and in
operation in about a year and a half" was part of this persons comment.

Hi,
I'm a student a flinders uni SA doing aquaculture, I have been reading
most of the messages on this aquaponics email thing and found it
interesting.
I need to do 2 weeks ( 10 days ) of work experience to complete this year,
Is there any one in south australia doing aquaponics or aquaculture (fresh
water finfish) that could give me work experience this summer.

Wow! We just grew some Triops (Triops logicauddatus) in an "instant
creature kit" my kids picked up at a learning store. They grow very
quickly and look like a miniature horseshoe crab. I find myself drawn
to the aquarium, just to watch and watch and watch... They are "too
cool" as my 8 year old likes to say..
>From the the little dust spec cysts we sprinkled on the water 2 weeks
ago, they are now 1 1/2 long. If I were a fish, I would say they look
mighty yummy. We give them two pin-head sized green pellets, and two
pin-head sized brown pellets every day. (I'm guessing the green
pellets are some kind of dried algae, and the brown ones are some kind
of protein thing?)
These creatures are usually found in fresh water vernal (temporary)
pools and mature quickly, then lay eggs (mostly cysts) then die. The
pool dries up, and next year (or ten years later) when the rains come,
the cysts hatch and it all starts again.
It made me think of other freshwater critters (Like daphnia) that have
a more continuous life cycle. Daphnia seem so much easier than brine
shrimp, and would this be great fish food? Are these critters just the
right size to clog filters, etc?
Thanks,
Carolyn

I just found this website. It's mostly about algae in small aquariums,
but I bet there are several interesting tidbits in there for aquaponic
growers too.
