Subject: AEON Foundation provides authors with 150 US$ award

From: Jacky Foo

Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 12:04:18 +0100

Hello Everyone

I am happy to announce that the AEON Foundation of Japan has agreed to

co-sponsor the Internet Conference on Material Flow

Analysis of Integrated Bio-Systems, March-Oct 2000 (see

http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ic-mfa for scope, conference theme

awards for the presentation of papers with authors or co-authors from

developing countries. About 25 awards of 150 US$ are available and intended

to cover costs related to the preparation and presentation of papers as

well as to encourage local colleagues to participate.

Please take advantage of this award opportunity to present a paper !

So far; 10 abstracts (P1-P10) in the tentative list (below) of titles of

papers have been approved and the rest are in the review process.

2nd CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

We are looking for another 20 abstract submissions and would like to invite

you to consider making a presentation of your work that can quantify the

flow of materials through integrated bio-systems in one of the 11

conference themes (see http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ic-mfa).

The deadline for the 2nd Call for Abstracts is 31 Dec. 1999.

A final call of abstracts will be released in January 2000.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT

An abstract should not be more than 1 page in size and may contain text,

table, diagrams, etc. It should include the title of paper, full name(s)

and

postal and email address(es) of author(s), summary and keywords.

Please send your abstract(s) to foo@swipnet.se.

All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Planning Group of the

Conference. Authors should wait for formal notification of acceptance of

the abstracts before proceeding into the preparation of the full paper(s).

There have been many offers to help with the archives, both on and off list,

and I appreciate all the suggestions and offers for various ways in which we

might make the archived posts available.

Just wanted to let you know that we've decided on a location and the files

will be available soon. Although the format at first may be strictly full

copies of the digest version (so they can be viewed according to date), it

will soon after be a searchable archive. As my time permits the extraneous

posts will be removed (although I know how much you all enjoy reading

someone else's "unsubscribe" requests). And Jim has plans to make it very

user-friendly, because of course he and I have as much to gain from an

easily usable site as anyone else in the group....

At any rate, I just wanted you to know that it's close to completion. I do

appreciate all the input on the subject and the personal offers I've

received. Long-time member and contributor Jim Sealy will be doing the

"heavy" work and providing the site and tech support, and it looks to be a

great resource for the group when completed. We have almost two years of

activity to transfer.

In the meantime, current life responsibilities still take first priority.

As soon as it's available, we'll post an announcement along with instructions.

Have a great holiday season.

Paula, at the risk of sounding maudlin, I want to thank you and Tom for all

you have done to promote aquaponics via this forum. As you likely know,

aquaponics is a passion and a "cause" for me personally, and you guys are

very much a part of my involvement in it.

Apart from my long standing academic interest in aquaponics and controlled

environment agriculture, I greatly appreciate interacting with those who are

not afraid to take risks, and get sweaty, and get their fingernails dirty,

and bust some knuckles if necessary to do real work in the real world. So

thanks again, and also to Jim Sealy for his work in getting this into an

archived format. And all the others in the group...both the semi-lurkers

and the "regulars"- as long as we get off our duffs and do some of this

stuff we talk about here in this forum, then it has all been worth it,

because although it is not an environmental panacea, I do know from

experience that aquaponics is Do-able and it is Fun to do.

I will be relocating - moving my household and everything soon. I will have

to change my email address, and everything, so in a few weeks I will drop

off the radar screen for a while. By Jan 1, 2000, tho', I should be up an

running again...as long as the Y2K thing doesn't flare up...and I don't

think it will, at least from a technical standpoint on the Internet, etc..

I hope to rejoin this group after a few weeks of moving boxes and visiting

the landfill to eliminate all the stuff I have accumulated here, there, and

everywhere over the last 15 years. Oy vey!

The last 2 years or so on this list has been fun and educational....thought

provoking....and challenging....to me personally, so I appreciate it very

much.

Thanks for letting us be both as academic, studious and serious as it gets,

and at the same time as comical and as ridiculous as it gets on this list at

times...I know that some folks don't appreciate the silliness, which is

understandable to a degree, I suppose, but as I said before, if I can't

dance, I don't want to be a part of the revolution.

Question: I have added 7 - 2 lb catfish to my raceway, along with water

hyacinth, watercress, and a few other plants, a long roll of hay in mesh,

some clams and clamshells. Do I need to feed them something or will they find

enough in the raceway? So far they have existed about a week with no feeding.

They hide under the roll of hay. Any ideas?

That is fantastic news Paula. I would like to take this opportunit to

thank you and Tom again for your ongoing sponsorship of this forum, your

generous sharing of your experience and your wise counsel to novices and

aquaponics wannabes.

Do you recall a guy on the Hydro list who put together a searchable

archive in what seemed like days? (Speaking of which, have you heard

from the Hydro list lately? I have gotten nothing since October 31 and

Inter Urban Water Farms didn't respond to my e-mail about it)

I think sometimes we all tend to take ourselves too seriously; and while I

can genuinely understand that some things just don't fit in with our

"schedule for the day", I think we each can use a little "silliness" once in

a while -- besides, it's one of those things that reveals a little more

about the individual on the other side of this cybercommunity. There are

many folks on this list whom we've met and others we hope to meet someday.

Comments that reveal a little about that person's "other self" are

automatically tucked away for when they might be used in a face-to-face, and

I'm comfortable with that.

Of course, this is a good time to remind everyone that what's "gone before"

and will be posted from here on out will be visible to those outside this

community of aquaponickers (or whatever you always call us). It should be

good for the industry, good for those seeking information, and probably only

somewhat embarrassing in rare instances. I'll probably be one of the first

to "wish I'd never said THAT on the list"! :>)

Hope your move goes smoothly.

The mail group is a great way for us to continue to promote aquaponics, and

you can be sure that we learn as much from this group as anyone. I

appreciate all those who participate and keep the info "rolling".

I did receive notice about the new location/format or whatever for the hydro

list, and there has been quite a few postings over the last few days. I

thought if you were already a subscriber it was an automatic notice, but

just in case some others were dropped in error, here's a copy of the post I

received just as they got themselves back "on the air".

Tom,

You will need to feed them. Unless your raceway sports insects, tadpols

and other small fish/animals, the catfish will starve. I have seen catfish

eat algea, but I doubt that your raceway is loaded with the stuff.

Just want to acknowledge you efforts in making the world a better place!

Tom,

Where did you get the catfish? Were they farm raised or wild? How large

is your raceway? How much hay did you add? Are there any clams left or

have the catfish eaten them already? what sort of substrate is there

in your raceway? What sort of filter do you have now? Are these meant

for pets or table fare?

Off the cuff, if they're farm raised channel cats, I'd say feed the fish

a good handful (~3/4 cup) of floating 30% protein catfish feed, a little

at a time, morning and night and then increase the ration until there's

some left after 15 minutes.

If they're wild caught, try to get them to eat some liver and a little

processed feed until they're used to the pellets alone.
