Yea Jay, please tell us where you bought your Gnatrol. If it works it's a real
bargain.

Hi Paula,
I totally agree with everything you say. This is one of the reasons I am
trying to disassociate myself from the "winter-time" course in the UVI. (I
feel as if I have created a monster here.)
Dr. J. said that he couldn't get 5 people interested. I, and my wife, would
love to go to the Virgin Islands in February and so would, apparently, a lot
of other people.
That's about it.
Thanks......Steve (I promise I won't mention this again unless someone else
contacts me about it.) (If I keep bugging them, maybe we can all meet in the
Virgin Islands in February!!) :)

Steve, and others, I believe when this was originally suggested, Dr. Rakocy
pointed out the problems that would be associated with their (University of
the Virgin Islands) hosting a winter course. I'm not trying to discourage
anyone, and I actually have nothing to do with any decision making UVI might
make. I can, however, relate to the logistics of trying to conduct normal
university business while educating, housing, and entertaining outsiders at
the same time.
Many universities offer summer short courses, including our own University
of Missouri at Columbia which offers a greenhouse short course every summer.
During the summer, the UVI dorms are empty for the most part (housing),
their schedules are more open (increased time to spend with the attendees),
and they can devote that time to the subject at hand (and take time for
snorkeling or whatever).
Just keep in mind that this is a not a private enterprise where the
facilities are designed with outside courses in mind.

Thanks Roy,
I think that the only reason Paula lets me stay on her list is that I bring
out responses in otherwise quiet people.
Now, I have 2 bales of hay sitting in my front yard. OH BOY!!

I agree with that someone that said that we should not be reinventing the
wheel with regard to the use of barley straw for the control of algae.
Barley straw is the only straw that works . All of the literature says
that and that is why barley straw commands a premium. Just because hay and
straw both come in bales does not mean they are the same thing, you would
not throw a cotton bale in your pond. Advocating the use of any straw or
hay will only cause unsatisfactory results and disapointment and then
reports that the use of barley straw for algae control is only a wivestale
when in fact barley straw does work if it and only it is used. Personal
experience has proven it to me and a number of neighbors with ponds that I
have provided barley straw to. Thanks for reading through my venting,
ROY

Steve,
No problem mon!!!
Run them through Ure shredder and spread them on the field..
or open them up and put all your kitchen scraps on them and put a few
pounds of red wrigglers on it...
U'll soon have a few pounds of nice compost earth...
Mike...

Bon Giorno mi fratelli..
Our goals and aims are very close... Im glad that you enjoyed...
Right now Im still tiptoing around ok? And BTW.. Im sorry Ted for
seemingly taking the crown for the largest post... lol..
Hope U dont mind?
Gone back to working on my micro pumping system for waterhole use...
right now we are seeing a drought!! This could be adapted to supply
water for aquaponic systems etc, tried solar but right now the cost of
solar seems so prohibitive that it seems cheaper here to buy a 3.5 hp
lawnmower and convert it for field use, either with turning an
alternator, and running 12v motors or turning a larger pump shaft
directly... rather than buying very expensive stuff....
And please for all the sick types out there... stomping and looking
mean... my joke above was not intended to be looked upon as the start
horn for a competition !!
Have a great weekend y'all..
Have a great restday... make it.. take it...
Mike. ;)

The only up close and personal contact I have had with the stuff was from a
graduate student we had some years back. She wanted to grow it for the same
reason you do. She had a serious weight problem. I let her set up an aquarium
to experiment with it in a corner of the laboratory. In less than a week the
damn aquatium stunk worse than an open cesspool. I threw the aquarium out and
suggested she try Weight Watchers. A few months later she decided she would
be happier going to graduate school at Berkley and left us. A year or so
later she came back to town to visit her parents ( this was her hometown) and
stopped by the lab to say "Hello ". What a difference ! She had lost at least
30 pounds. She said she had tried the dried spirulina from the health food
stores out there on the Left coast. She said the stuff tasted awfull and
caused her to fart so much she was afraid of being declared a fire hazard and
a social outcast. And, folks, believe me that would take some doing in those
days. I have visited that hallowed institution a few times in the course of
my own scientific investigations and there were graduate students who bathed
semi-annually who were socially acceptable there. She then remembered my
suggestion and went to Weight Watchers.
I think Weight Watchers has the right idea. Eat less, weigh less.
I hope this helps.

Dave
