This is Kate, Ted's wife...yes, we homeschool all 4 of our kiddos. Feel free
to ask any questions, Mike. Maybe off list? All 4 of our kids (even the
little one) worked part-time in our aquaponic greenhouse. It was a good
learning experience for them. We killed a couple of rattle snakes (science),
grew lots of red wigglers ( more science) not to mention all that lettuce,
basil and fish (even more science). Kids helped Dad in the delivery aspect
of it, learned about business, finances, PR, corporate politics....all good
homeschooling experiences. Jack, our boy, even helped in the construction of
the facility (physical education). He, at age 10, out worked them college
boys we hired to haul gravel!
We have always homeschooled, so any questions you have, feel free to ask.

Wow. It'll take a while for me to "shake off" that imagery.
Wonder if she was the same campus radical at Berkley that got up on the
podium while all the national media cameras were rolling, and shrilly
declared that "We are probably breathing the last of the oxygen"....and all
this time I thought she was just being a zealot for Gaia and Mother
Earth......now I know what she was referring to.....
You know, in the original Disney soundtrack, wasn't it Mary Poppins who took
"a spoonful of Bean-O to help the spirulina go down...the spiralina to go
down...spiralina to go down....in a most delightful way...."??
Wonder if you fed spiralina to the Tilapia, and if they too, would develop
gas, and under intensive fish culture your tank would start lookin' like a
jacuzzi!?!? ;-)
Everybody jump in! ;-)
But Seriously, Folks....Tally Ho! ;-)

Devon Because I have so few fish in my system I've played with adding bone meal, blood meal,
sulfur, Iron ect. so far I haven't killed the fish I have, but the real solution in my case is
more fish.

Not sure I want to jump into that Jacuzzi, but we could capture all that
methane and heat the greenhouse!

Hey Dave!!
I just need to correct you here... Im smiling because if U ever saw me
UD not need this explanation.. but I think it may inspire some of you.
As I recall I wrote..
Ok friends..I found out this year that I have a high cholesterol level
due to hereditary factors, and need to supplement my diet by more
natural things.. since this yea rIve been eating a lot more food and
vegetables from the land based farm but looking more and more into an
aquaponic system to grow some of my foods too.
So.. I have no WEIGHT PROBLEM, but a CHOLESTEROL Problem... and U know I
too used to look around a persons midsection when they mentioned
cholesterol too..but I did a medical trace and found out that this came
from my fathers side... it is possible to know/do this after doing a
blood screen, which I asked my parents to do too. My Dad has already
probs because of his refusal to go more natural..Ive seen the iris of
his eyes go from black to gray white in 3 months after no longer eating
healthy!!
U see Jamaican food is rated as being some of the most tasty in the
world but there are a lot of dishes prepared with say coconut oil etc..
and this greasy food is causing havoc all over the world among
indigenous folks..
I have noted a lot of studies done by Native Americans, Blacks,
Japanese, that suggest a return to natural food was the start to a more
healthy citizens...
My family is a mixture of European and Afro Caribbean, and on BOTH sides
the tend to be very susceptible to weight gain. Quite a few 6 footers in
my family and a few shorter folks over 250 lbs!!
Anyway, I decided to try a test on myself. Remember I am 5' 8'' and on
the beginning this test on the 5th Nov 2000 145.5 lbs. On the 5th of
December after radically changing my diets to more grains, cereals and
steamed foods, fish and meats... less oils, more olive oil etc I lost 3
lbs! BTW I was eating a lot of a variety of mere sprouts.. sprouts in
just about everything from birchermuesli to soup to meat gravies to
salads..
This is how the cholesterol looked..
5.11.2000 5.12.2000
HDL Cholesterol 0.9-1.9 mmol/l norm. 1.0 0.9
LDL Cholesterol 1.5-3.6 mmol/l norm. 4.6 3.9
Cholesterol 3.9-5.2 mmol/l norm. 6.0 5.1
Triglyceride 0.56-2.37 mmol/l norm. 1.75 1.44
I did not eat any less, neither did I have to go through any CRASS
painful leaving out of certain things. I just left out the butter in my
sandwiches etc, had a slice of avocado instead .. etc.
I hope this will inspire more of us to take a look at our diets.. I am
now CONVINCED beyond a shadow of a doubt we ARE WHAT we eat...
so... back to my pushups... lol..
P.S. I am also concerned about the way the last generation... including
my younger brother.. almost 6 foot and 6 yrs younger or my brother in
law.. over 6 foot odd at 14!! is growing and noone is saying anything..
I wonder SERIOUSLY about residuals in our foods... this is also a reason
to be interested in a family size aquaponics setup.. to grow all my own
food.
There was an interesting discussion on the Tilapia newsgroup about
residual hormones, in fish, and the same goes on other animal lists I
subscribe to. Im becoming VERY skeptical about meats sold here most of
it from feedlot and mass fattened animals. Just as with vaccines gone
awry, Im not too convinced yet that we always are admitting what is true
and right.. when I consider things like the stevia/aspartame,
hydrogen/fossil fuel, hormone stimulated/natural growth issues I get a
bit concerned because Ive learnt we humans sure love to hide and cover
up... especially if it means making a lot of money..
The same is true of schools.. I live on the path home from a large
primary school. When I was younger, any elder was treated with respect
..one said good morning sir.. goodmorning maam.. now if I try even to
point out a untied shoelace, Im being told about my anatomy, and where I
should go mind ma own business..
I dont know what marriage does to ones head.. bu thinking about kids etc
in the last few weeks is starting to scare me... especially if I think
of putting them through a "feedlot" system (please dont even flame me
for this .. I went thru it toooo... ;) ) over which I have no control..
hence my query re homeschooling.
I dont consider myself radical neither overly zealous.. I just think all
folks dealing with even aquaponics have one thing in common... we all
are/were and will not be satisfied with the things told to us...
supposedly "normal". We all have had to experiment and try something
new, and prove for ourselves what is right and true.. and that means
pearlite vs gravel, pumps vs gravity flow, or guano vs fish poo.
Try, test, prove, judge, discern!! We are called upon to do so..
Go get em!!
Have a great Sunday..
Mike.. (trying not to trip coming off the soapbox...!!)

I sat through a presentation from a water gardening
expert this weekend. He mentioned that barley straw
only controls algae within certain pH ranges. He
advocates ignoring pH for water gardening (not
necessarily aquaponics) -- so said to stick with shade
for algae control rather than straw. His name is
Jamie Beyer from Ames, IA. He wrote an Ortho book on
water gardening. I included that so that you could
maybe search for info and get the effective pH ranges
somewhere -- he did not mention what they were.
Later,
Mike

Hi Ted,
Nothing slow about me! I was going through some of my old email and found
this message. Don't remember if I ever forwarded it to the list or not. I
don't know what happened to Duncan. I have emailed him several times, but I
can not find him anymore. He was a real authority. Don't know if something
happened to him or not. But, anyway, here is the website. It is old by now,
but still has some good info.

combination of the above since September. I don't remember you sending this.
I have contacted these people and hope to be hearing from them.
