Carlos,
I don't know of a Spanish equivalent for Bok Choi or Bok Choy- it is a
type of greens in the cabbage or chard family I believe. It is also
known as Pak Choi. It isn't what is known in the US as Chinese
Cabbage or Napa Cabbage which has a tighter larger head and light
green leaves. It is used in stir-fry cooking and can be used at the
baby stage 4" or full-sized 12" +.
http://chinesefood.about.com/food/chinesefood/library/blglossaryaltter
ms.htm?iam=dpile&terms=%2Bbok+%2Bchoi has descriptions of a number of
Chinese ingredients, here is what they say:
"Bok Choy - A type of cabbage, the most common variety of which is the
distinctive vegetable with the white stem and dark green leaves
readily available in most supermarkets. There is also Shanghai or
baby bok choy, a smaller version of the same vegetable. Besides being
used in soups and stir-fries, you'll also find it in braised dishes.
Keep in the vegetable crisper section of the refrigerator. Rinse
thoroughly before using."

For a drawing of a baby variety go to
http://www.pacificrim-gourmet.com/mei_qing_choi.htm
For a full size bok choy go to
http://bok.isamillionaire.com/?page=about

Your best bet on nomenclature may be to show a picture to some of your
Argentine Chinese people to see if they recognize it. The Cornell
site for Pak Choi Production is at
http://www.cals.cornell.edu/dept/flori/pakchoi/index.html I couldn't
get the site to open beyond the cover page.

Too much ammonia. You could sanitize a bathroom tile floor with ammonia
levels that high. I can't imagine much left living after a few hours at
that level of ammonia.
You need lots of plants and a mature biofilter. In the interim, do a
massive water exchange and recheck or calibrate your ammonia test kit.

Bruce,
are you saying to add salt directly to the water containing fish and plants
? I know that in traditional recirc systems this is done, but in aquaponic
systems, doesn't the salt affect the osmoregulation of the plant causing it
to wilt and be stunted ? What is the maximum ppm of NaCl you can have before
the plants can be affected ? I heard it was in the range of 32ppm. What does
1 teaspoon per gallon give in ppm's? Although I did not use NaCl directly
in my system, I did use NaCO3 and really screwed up my plants last year. I
did not have the equipment to analyze the ppm's of Na but figured I was
hovering around the 30 ppm's.
I'm not trying to knock-down your response, I am just curious ( as
always ), about other aquaponers methods.

Hi Ian:

No never seen it, but it certainly seems suspicious.

I'm continually amazed at the creativeness of these "hacker for profit"
people. They constantly push the envelope of what can be accomplished.
Unfortunately the internet allows for numerous warez groups to share their
new "hacks" which is why the problem is becoming so widespread.

The only real solution is to change e-mail addresses on a regular basis, but
this just infuriates me (not to mention being a royal pain) so I refuse to
do it.

May I join the spinich conversation ?
I have not grown spinich in an aquaponics system, but I did grow spinich in a
hydroponic vermiculite flood and drain system for several years at the
Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
The variety of spinich I like best is Orient Joker. It is a hybrid that lasts
longer without bolting than any other variety I have tried. Most years I did
not see those little yellow flowers until the second week in June which is
fairly hot here in Alabama. Actually, the flowers are edible but get rather
bitter after a few days. So far as I am aware seed is only available from
Evergreen Y. H. Enterprises (http://www.evergreenseeds.com) (714)637-5769.
If you call be prepared to hold the line for a while until they can get an
English speaker to talk to you.
I have no finincial interest in this company. I am just a very pleased
customer.
I hope this helps.

Dave

Laberge The salt is for a fish only system so the planting beds will
need to be taken off line temporarily or the fish need to be placed in
to a hospital tank or maybe some 55gal.drums . The drums can also be
used in circuit as the water source (maybe a clarifier)for the planting
beds if you take the fish grow out tanks off line for treatment. Because
what ever you use to treat the fish can affect the bacteria bed under
the plants and that alone can cause fish die offs or stunting .
It might be helpful for some folks to install ultraviolet in line to
keep the boogie bugs down too .Just remember that UVs loose
effectiveness at about 6 months and need to be replaced or you will get
an other outbreak

Dave,
Did you find that the spinach seed needed to be covered to germinate?
Based on Ted's comments I suspect that is why I had poor results with
my trial in which I simply broadcast the seed on the surface of my
perlite beds. I found that Bull's Blood Beets required coverage to do
well; maybe I'll give spinach another try.

I agree with you that Evergreen has an interesting, but expensive seed
collection.

UV filtration is not a bad Idea to keep your everyday nasty's down. If you
size the unit for the amount of microwatts of UV intensity needed (usually
30,000) at your certain flow rate at 60% end of lamp life you will usually
get about 9,000 hours continuous duty out of the bulbs. 60% end of lamp
life sizing means you are actually slightly over sizing the lamps so when
you first install your lamp you are actually receiving more than the
recommended microwattage needed. After 9,000 hrs (recommended lamp life)
you should still be receiving just under or at the necessary microwattage to
accomplish the job. If you look at Emperor Aquatics UV literature they have
a pretty good explanation of how to size UV sterilizers. All of there
sizing criteria is based on 60% end of lamp life.

Thanks Brian, I guess I misunderstood your response.

Just a note for the beginners about u.v, in order for u.v.'s to function at
their best , filtration is required. This all adds up to a lot of money and
is not for everyone, nor every system.
I work with u.v. because trout are fragile little critters, and it doesn't
take long for certain undesirable bacteria to attack the fish.

Just got a flyer in the Greenhouse Producer News yesterday
that has an ad for Koi (4" for $.95, 50 min). Haven't
checked koi prices lately so don't know how that compares
and we've never ordered from them before. They also list
pond plants and will do a weekly fax of specials.

Hi Chris,

I have a few hundred Koi in my pond. I will be getting them out shortly
(within a month or so.).

How many do you want? 1 or 2 or a hundred.

Since, I'm really not a Koi distributor, I'm sure that we could come to an
agreeable price.

Get back to me if you wish.

Steve (also, pls. contact me at: careplus 'at' execpc.com so we don't burden
Paula's list.)

Subject: Steve, change your underwear!!
From: "STEVE SPRING"
Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 18:56:40 -0500

O.K., enough of this serious stuff,

How about a little humor with a message? I thought I would entitle this,
"Paula, you never told me that you had to change your underwear?" (This post
is basically for the "newbies" especially the "newbies" that are
using/trying/ or thinking about trying the S&S System.) By the way, I still
consider myself a "newbie".

This is a "touch" risque, but not too bad.

There was this lifeguard who always strolled up and down the beach. The
girls always followed this guy wherever he went. There was this other guy
who always watched this lifeguard with his female entourage. One day, this
guy asked the lifeguard what he did to make all of these women follow him
around. The lifeguard told him that it was simple. "I just place a potato in
my swimsuit. The women's imagination do the rest and they just follow me all
over the place." Well, this guy decided to do the same thing the next day.
Well, he did. He walked all up and down the beach with the potato in place
and not one single woman followed him or talked to him or anything. He told
the lifeguard that he tried the "potato" trick and had not had one amorous
advance. The lifeguard told him, "Well you see my friend, you have to put it
in the front!"

Point is: no one told him.

I used to tell my son to do "this & that" and his response was always, well,
no one told me. I would respond by saying, "Well no one tells you to eat,
but you seem to be able to handle that o.k."

I guess no one told him to take out the trash, clean his room, etc.

My point to all of this rambling, and there is one, is that I changed my
system to the S&S system. I was very disappointed with the lack of results.
I had to change a little bit, but my system is basically a 90% S&S system. I
had no improvement in water clarity, DO, nitrates/nitrites (this is what I
was talking about Devon) or anything. I was very frustrated. I knew that
this system worked, but it wasn't working for me.

(NOW!! NO ONE TELLS ME TO CHANGE MY UNDERWEAR. I JUST DO BECAUSE THEY NEED
TO BE CHANGED!!)

My first experience with lettuce in the growbeds with the S&S system was
fantastic. They became worse and worse after this. My water clarity became
terrible. The fish wouldn't eat unless I made a complete water change. (1000
gal+ two or three times a week.) Now, I have been fighting VALDEZ oil spill
algae and a tremendous fungus gnat infestation.(Which I never had before
switching to the S&S system.)

Then, I had this tremendous brain storm one day: THESE GROWBEDS ARE FILTHY!
WHY NOT CLEAN THEM! (CHANGE YOUR UNDERWEAR, STEVE!!)

I spent about 6 hours cleaning "unbelievable sludge" from the growbeds.

Since that day, which is now almost 2 weeks ago, I have not made a water
change, my nitrate/nitrite level is way down, my DO is way up, my water
clarity is unbelievable. It (the water) is that healthy "tea brown" which
Dr. J. refers to. The fish are eating like never before. My facility smells
better. The tomatos that I could never get to grow are growing. The lettuce
seeds that I planted 3 days ago are sprouting. (I continue to be amazed!!)

SO THIS IS, NO ONE TOLD ME TO DO THIS!

So, the S&S system works beautifully. You just have to keep it clean.(Kind
of a "no brainer". But, if you don't know this, then you can have problems
that will drive you crazy. I know they did to me.)
