Jay,
Very nice photographs !!
What is the name of the lettuce in your lake ?
Where can I get more information on the vertical system you
used for the strawberries ? It appears to be working well.

It looks like he's using the vertical gardening system from
www.vertigro.com. I've purchased from them before and been very happy with
them as a company.

They're busy upgrading their website right now so you might have a strange
experience with them (I just ordered something from them and wrestling with
their mid-upgrade was a bit tricky). But they're good with technical
assistance and customer service, so don't let their present internet
difficulties put you off.

Subject: How to floculate and filter aquatic excrement
From: Carolyn Hoagland
Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 13:15:06 -0500

Hi Folks,

I am in the middle of a swimming hole experiment. We have a 25,000
gallon lined pond that we plan to filter through a constructed
wetland. What does this have to do with aquaponics? We are hoping to
learn enough from our first constructed wetland and swimming hole
project to use the same techniques for some recirculating fish
ponds.
We assume the rain will stop long enough for us to do some earth
moving sometime soon(*sigh*). In the meantime, we are hoping to
prevent the swimming hole from becoming a stagnant, stinking pit of
green slime. It is currently full of gazillions of little tadpoles
that appear to be performing this continuous function:
tadpoles + greenwater =
bigger tadpoles + excrement =
more greenwater.

We are not looking for "swimming pool quality" crystal clear water and
are not opposed to sharing the swimming pool with the tadpoles , but
the algae and excrement are increasing even as I write. I expect it
will be several weeks before the constructed wetland is operational.

If you have any suggestions for *temporary* filtering (or settling
tank) methods, please blast away!

Here is what I have to work with:

A pump capable of moving 12,000 gal per hour.
Quite a bit of extra flexible pond liner.
Pool vacuum head and with flexible hose that can attach to pump.
Straw bales.
fine denier filter fabric capable of catching 60% of the vacuumed
excrement,
(the other 40% becomes tiny suspended particles from the pump action)

Thanks in advance, I hoping that several of you won't be able to
resist sending your opinions this way.

In a system such as the Speraneo's, would it advisable, or even safely
possible, to turn the pumping system off at night (back on at daylight)?

Thanks,

Subject: Vertical axis windmills, etc.
From: "TGTX"

Some years back on this list, I was yammering on about the Pierson vertical
axis windmill design equipped with "stators" to funnel wind into the turbine
and create electricity at fairly low wind speeds.

I said:

"Richard Pierson wrote a book back in 1978 which I kept a copy of. It is
entitled "Build-It Yourself Natural Energy Sources: Solar, Wind & Water
Power Made Easy"
.Chapter 10 of that book describes in great detail how to
build the Vertical-Shaft Pierson Wind Turbine
it is basically a modified
S-rotor system with aluminum or galvanized sheet metal scoops or
half-cylinders as rotors, but it ALSO has these neat stationary vectoring
vanes to scoop up even more wind into the rotor. These are really just fixed
walls pointing at a tangent to the rotor buckets. He calls these fixed walls
stator vanes, or just stators

That is the best part of this design, I
think because it allows the configuration to begin putting out power in 5
MPH winds or below, depending on the length of the stator (wall) from the
vertical shaft out to the end of the stator. You have to rig up a generator
and some gears, and for high winds you might have to figure out how to shut
it down or rig up a governor, but it looks do-able for a tinkerer like
myself
. "

Here's some more info on vertical axis wind turbines/mills.

Think greenhouse pumps and fan power, and heat, and chillers, etc.

The plants you have may be fine for next winter. Ours grow a lot of runners
and growth in the summer, but we cut them back and they do OK. Just have to
keep the bugs and fungus problems out.
Did you get your system from Tim Carpenter? I note his web site is down.
How big is it ?

Ted, Thanks for your well wishes. I think the pool might be a little
difficult, cuz there won't be much "surprise" with the birth as my wife
was/is a prime c-section candidate, and with the last birth 4.5 years ago,
we actually prepared a bagel-cream cheese, fruit and mimosa breakfast for
those friends and family members who were able to/interested in coming to
the hospital first thing in the morning. That's one of the perks of having
a planned birth!

Although, I could just keep my mouth shut about when the Dr. schedules the
delivery, and you guys can duke it out for when it will happen!!! The due
date actually is February 3
.interesting!

Here's a detail that some of the ladies on the list might sweat
.My niece
was a whopping 11lbs., 2oz. when she was born!!!!!!! AND, she was three
weeks premature!!!!! The funniest thing is that she had to be in the
neonatal ICU for a few days, and seeing her ENORMOUS body next to the
premies and super-premies (like a pound or two) was pretty unbelievable.

Oh, her brother was 10lbs. 12oz.!!!! Sheesh!

I agree with Jay on the eyepiece thing, but I would still recommend the Sony
Mavica for it's ease of use and relatively low price. Depending on the
model that you buy, you can get an viewfinder, but the lower cost ones only
have the LCD display on back.

The nicest thing about the Mavica is that is takes JPEG images and stores
them on your run of the mill 3.5 inch floppy disks! This is great for
transferring files, and they are in a universal format that is easily
emailed without bogging down the connection!

Well Carolyn.
Hope is there for you
. tell us a bit more about the aggregates you can
get in your neck of the woods, like 1/4 inch gravel, limestone, marl,
riverstones
.???

I did the same as you described many a time and I think (know rather
)
that the water quality you will get if you do it right will exceed BY
FAR what you seem to expect here.

I am at this late hour of the night coming in from an installation I did
using growbeds at sea, and to me it is still an inspiration everytime I
open their stinking septic tanks, and then progressively open my aerobic
tanks, and then gravel filters, and then biofilters and growbeds
. with
NOT a smell and CRYSTAL clear water
I stood in the moonlight tonight
and could see 18 inches into the growbeds
. I could see the snails
crawling around and all

Pity the humans dealing with my system cant be as smart as the smart
bacteria doing all the work!! :< They caused a pump ground fault
( no
Ted it wasnt you
.lol)

What type of aquatic excrement are you talking about?? Makes it sound
yucky but still cant be as bad as the real thing!!

Do you have land moving equipment? Hand shovels labour?
Do U have a workable idea of what layout you want to use in terms of
landscape considerations?
Do you want to grow a "crop" of something for use?
Do you have duckweed where you are from?
Are you allowed to use water hyacinths where you are?

Youll get all the help you need right here
. Ure in the right
place
.:) Most of all
.you WILL get that water clean provided it isnt
some serious gunk running in it
.take it from me
. Im just an hoiur
away since writing seeing living proof!!

Dream of swimming in CLEAR water!! It can be done

Regards.
