The Secret Life of Plants... yep, that's where I read about music and
plants. Thanks for jogging this tired old mind. I read it long ago in
college. I could tell you how long ago that was but then I'd have to
shoot you or something. (joke!).
There was a section that impressed me so much. It talked about the
development of cactus strains that were decorative and, unlike other
cacti, had no thorns. Burbank? Was that the fella's name? He would
talk to the cactus, telling it that it no longer needed the protection
of the thorns. Because of this one man, we have all the new variations
of thornless cacti.
We did some experiments in college. I'll talk to you about it off-list
if ya like. I find that intent and belief shapes reality. The quantum
physics folks are doing a pretty good job of proving this to be true.

Major Dittos, Mick and Bert. The Spearaneos are my real-world inspirational
heros, and uh, heroines, well, you know what I mean for cryin' out loud!
Now I want to share some good news, too. This weekend was a turning point
for new developments here on the prairie. I came up with, and really
entcountered, you might say, a Big Chalupa Metanoia, a kind of, er, 12 step
plan for recovery you might say, after a business partner of mine and I came
across some bargain fish tanks, which we have already secured and which will
be installed here at my place in the next few months, Lord willing.
Yes, I know what I said before about business partners. But this guy is
AOK. Long time friend and fellow traveler. We've been in the trenches
together before and managed to stay friends. Anyway, so the fish tanks will
be set up on about a 3000 ft^2 footprint, more or less, with about 1000
square feet for aquaponic food plants using grow beds of my own design, IF I
want to do that...it is optional for me and I just might take my time
building the growbeds back up again from scratch....like a work of
art....Yes, I know the ratios are way off from everything you may have
heard, but it'll be allright. I'm just going with the flow, and the space
and plans I have available for right now.
The total area... 4000 sq.ft....will be all open air for right now. So the
aquaponic plant production may be just seasonal, or I may keep ornamental
grasses growing in the beds year round and let the weather, and my
enthusiasm, go where it will go and be what it will be..A small greenhouse
will be used as part of the system for special springtime
projects, but, for now, there will be no direct plumbing connection between
the small greenhouse and the outdoor system.
At this time I would like to quote you something from C.S. Lewis because it
is all about choices. I believe choices are the basis for metanoia,
repentance, recovery, healing, growth, rehabilitation, development,
improvement, transformation,
santification...progress....ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.......which are all slightly
different but also related concepts.....and I like the depiction here that
Lewis gives us of those kinds of things as ongoing processes.
When the business partnership I had several years ago flew apart at the
wheels and I had to sell my homestead and move to my current location, and
then, when my only fish tank got caught up in a strong wind storm and was
ripped into pieces, I could have just
"chosen" to do nothing at all, nothing new and different, and deny the Big
Chalupa (which is a choice, and which I basically did for a long time), or I
could have turned, and turned, and turned. In the ongoing battles in this
war I find my country in, and in it's aftermath, I will strive and seek.....
to turn, turn, turn.....O.K. crank up that Roger McGuinn electric12 string
riff and let 'er rip.....
Moral Choices by C.S. Lewis
(from a collection of readings entitled "The Joyful Christian")
"People often think of Christian morality as a kind of bargain in which God
says, "If you keep a lot of rules, I'll reward you, and if you don't I'll do
the other thing." I do not think that is the best way of looking at it. I
would much rather say that every time you make a choice you are turning the
central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little
different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with
all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this
central thing either into a Heaven creature or into a hellish creature:
either into a creature that is in harmony with God, and with its fellow
creatures, and with itself, or else into one that is in a state of war and
hatred with God, and with its fellow creatures, and with itself. To be the
one kind of creature is Heaven: that is, it is joy, and peace, and
knowledge, and power. To be the other means madness, horror, idiocy, rage,
impotence, and eternal loneliness. Each of us at each moment is progressing
to the one state or the other."
If I may add or expand on Lewis' observations, I would say that the power
that accomplishes the progress is not self generated. That is, one may
choose to turn one way or the other but the "rotational energy" or "spin" is
supplied from outside the self, IMHO.
Keep choosing to keep it spinnin', y'all (in the upward direction).
Everybody stand up and holler for Mr. Bert's big prize. Way to be, Mr.
Bert.
Ted

Hi, guys! I think a picture was taken at the State Fair...I'll try to get it
scanned...I also have a picture of Bert's greens at only 7 days old...people
at the Fair are amazed at what aquaponics can do... Bert's tilapia were
really pretty and we had lots and lots of people commenting about them at the
booth and gave out hundreds of copies of a printout we had with
recipes...people are getting more and more familiar with tilapia having seen
it at the grocery stores...not one person that has tried it has said anything
but good things about the taste! What an exciting time for us! Wishing only
the best for Bert and his brother Ralph who have been advocates for this for
years and thanks to S & S, the "grandaddy" of the movement and their
inspiration! Lyn Benson

Paula,
I have a question for you, and I realize you will likely be biased in some
form or fashion with it. However, I appreciate your wise counsel at this
time. Here goes: Do you suggest I attend the Bryson City school, or
purchase yours and Tom's video/manual course? Both are similar in price,
with the TN school being an investment in 4 days of my time - but it sure
seems like I would be getting exposed to much...
You may recall, I am the pastor developing a training center on Lookout Mtn
in northwest GA. Thanks for your counsel/advice. by the way, Deb could not
recall the name of that youth camp we served in back during the mid 80's in
your area. Boy, it sure was beautiful there...

I always thought that people who take the time to worry about what kind of
music their plants would like are usually people who are very conscientious
about plant care. I think that would contribute to the plants well being,
but surely music doesn't hurt. I know I respond to music!

Can somebody please forward this information that was posted last week or

Dawn you were saying that you warm to music. Should I asume that thats
acid rock or gangsta rap or would it be eastern citar or Chopin piano
concierto. Its the diferenses in music that creates the change in the
energy state of ourselves. I myself like a great variety of music some
for very brief periods others could go on all day. A good idea to find
out what would be the best music would be to observe your own body
emotional state. Anything that causes imbalance toward the negative is
likely to do the same for plants and animals. Feeling the vibration of
the music can give a good indication. It seems to be the music with the
drum beats and rithmic pulsing that are emphasized, cause the most
havok. Eastern music and clasical have a totaly diferent structure
compared to most popular music of today, and they are the ones that give
the best results.
