Hi Steve,

"Kind of like rubbing salt into a wound" but I was so impressed by my Pacu
tonight. I fed them when I got home and they honestly reminded me of movies
of "swarming pirannha". I fed them for almost an hour and they just kept on

Also, going to pick up another 7 of the Parron Shark cats in a couple of
days. I'm very, very excited about this.

Bruce,
Thats great stuff. I have drawn a Blank so far with locating any Pacu
in the Phills. Really really would appreciate any contacts numbers
for The Phill`s or Singapore when you catch up with Dennis.

Meanwhile I will try to find some info from Singapore.

Those Pangasius Sanitswongi look interesting,
found some pics of small ones here
http://www.planetcatfish.com/cotm/1999-02.htm

They say they are edible...anybody tried them ?

Steve H

Steve,Red and folks Paroon shark-catfish AKA Giant Pangasius
 Latin name: Pangasius Sanitswongi
temp 72F. to 82F.growth to 100" heaviest fresh water fish on earth and
from the Mekong river were they fish for them with whole dogs as bait
minimum tank size should be 900 gal.!!
Dennis has 8 left but I can get him to get more he sells them for
$14.00 each at the 2 inch size but my price is $7.00 or less not bad for
a fish that will give you 2 over 100lb boneless fillets each.
Last week we went to the Milwaukee county Zoo and in their fish
exhibits they have 21 Pacu 30lb. plus swimming around and 10 under that
size also various huge catfish like the 2 -5ft.Redtails and also shovel
noses you know the usual tank busters if you can you should go see it
on the Pacu they sell for .99 cents each plus shipping from the
Philippines about 1.40each to Wisconsin .
Red you might like to know that you can get the Pacu and Paroon
sharks from any Tropical fish exporter/importer from Singapore that is
one of the world wide fish cross roads and breeding centers but i will
get you the Philippians exporter number when I see Dennis next .He is on
vacation now

Hi Paula,

I don't want to subscribe using my hotmail account because, PLS FORGIVE
ME......ALL OF YOU.... for saying this. I would like information and
narrative concerning aquaponics, fishfarming, hydroponics, solar power, wind
power, etc. I'm so burned out about this constant deluge of the Sept. 11th
catastrophe and everyone's personal feelings and feedback.

Pls note that I'm also a Viet Nam Vet and in no way less patriotic than
anyone, (I spent my time jumping out of planes, coming out of
helicopters....someone said that they had killed their share of people.....I
won't get ito that.) but this is supposed to be an aquaponics list. YES, we
all have our private feelings, but I don't feel that this list is the place
for them.

As far as the Pacu, the Parron Shark catfish, etc., I will be honored to
share my success/problems with the list. I always feel that this list is so
dedicated to Tilapia that any stray from that is somehow a "no-no". I
personally don't like the fish. But, as I told Steve (Phillipines) tonight,
I was so impressed in watching them (the Pacu) eat. It is very exciting to
watch them.

I HOPE I DIDN'T STEP ON ANY TOES! See ya'll in NC. I already made my
reservations.....hope ya'll do the same.

p.s. If any of you want to BLAST ME, pls. feel free to do so at
careplus22. That way, we don't tie up Paula's list. Thanks a
lot.

 Thanks......Steve :)

So, Steve, why don't you just subscribe with your hotmail account?

As for conversations regarding species other than tilapia, why would you
suggest to take that off-list? There are lots of people interested in
aquaponics using other fish.

Steve,

This is just a quick note to say "I appreciate your recent comments", which
are listed below. We have all been distracted by other things recently, but
enough is enough. Maybe everyone will get back to just talking about
aquaponics and related topics now. By the way, I have signed up for the
course in Bryson City and I look forward to meeting you and other list
members there.

Hi Steve,
Boy am I envious !! I am living every moment with you though, so please
keep up the "live" commentary.

I would be especially interested to hear how they stand up to the Aquaponic
environment. I tried a couple of our local species Fish, a carnivorous
catfish
called a Hitto, and some type of local Carp. These were in the same tanks
as the Tilapia, and neither could stand any bad water spikes. All died
whilst
the Gravel Bed was coming on-line, whereas the Tilapia had no real problems.

Anyway, best of luck with your new "babys",

STEVE SPRING
I would suggest that your increases in feed are slow and monitored along with close monitoring
of water quality. I have had to step back on total feed because of total ammonia and nitrates.
I also have had quit feeding after 2pm because the plants can't remove ammonia after dark.
These fish just eat and grow. The more they eat the more they grow and the more they grow the
more they eat. I tell people you can watch them grow.
good luck

Has anyone on the list tasted pacu? is the texture of the flesh pleasing
etc.?
I understand that the Paroon shark is an asian catfish, the local grocery
stores are selling Basa here. That is a cat fish raised in Vietnam
Aquaculture, the Mekong River. Consumers seem to accept the flavor and
texture.
Rep. Mike Ross has sponsored a bill requiring the country of origin for
farm raised fish, which he deems necessary for domestic fish farmers to
compete in the market place.

I really like that phrase.."keep it spinnin'". Think I'll steal it from
you and C.S.

I'm so happy for you, Mr. Ted. It has been apparent how much you missed
having your system. (You and I talked a year ago, although you probably
don't remember. And I read one post you made some time ago about a
visit to your old greenhouse.) It makes me smile to know you'll be
doing what you love again.

Happy spinning to ya, Ted! Best wishes,

Mick

Steve,

I understand and respect your views...I wouldn't blast a friend for that.
I've been away for a few and should have known that this subject was getting
to people so I will keep this short. This list has given me so much
since I joined it...many of you are like family. I saw a movie once that
I loved but can't recall the name. This old guy was coming to terms with
the fact that his days were numbered. He wanted to go see his brother who
was
dying and he hadn't spoken to for years because of something that happened
when he was younger. The man hated the thought of either of them dying
without
making things right. The old man did not have a car or license so he drove
his John Deere riding mower across Iowa. Along the way he met many who
thought he was nuts until they got to know him, then they were all touched
by him. One was a runaway girl. She was scared and hungry...he fed her at
his campfire and they began talking. She had ran away for fear of her
parents
reaction to finding out she was pregnant. The old man was quiet for a moment
and told her something he told his kids. He would pick up a stick and hand
it
to them and tell them to break it...naturally they could. Then he would give
them a small bundle of sticks to break ... it was impossible. He would
tell them "That stick is you....the bundle is family". The next morning
the girl was gone and a bundle of sticks lay by the campfire. What I am
getting at is I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't share
things I thought could help my family. We are stronger together than we
are separately. Maybe my exposure to a lot of terrorist activity in Europe
gives me a greater sense of urgency, I don't know....
but I just want us all playing with our fish and plants for many years to
come.

I'll send those notes to those who requested them ASAP and keep further
responses offlist...one thing, Bruce's suggestion was in the manual (Pfizer
said their Teramycin was identical to what they sell for humans but please
only consider this if you know what you are doing and then ONLY in an
emergency)
along with some good info on colloidal silver. There is a ton of bad info on
this stuff on the net...but some good info too. I have wondered if ionic
silver could also treat fish diseases...here are some good pages...
http://www.silvergen.com/linksand.htm

http://escribe.com/health/thesilverlist/index.html

http://silverppm.tripod.com/csmanual.htm

if you look into this, the silver list is a great resource. Don't get
ripped
off by someone selling units that simply use 3 9 volt batteries connected in
series and sell for 130 bucks! Quality made colloidal silver is both safe
and from what I have read, has been found effective on wide range of
organisms
including anthrax. I also plan on testing it on fish fungal/bacterial
diseases.

peace...

BLAST!!! Naw, I'm just kidding. I think that a LOT of the people on this
list feel the same way as you do. I for one want to learn Everything and
anything I can about aquaponics. Different things are going to work for
different people, different areas, etc... I know that I am going to start
with Tilapia, but I want the option to go in other areas if I choose. How
will I know if I don't check out what "Y'all" are doing at your place or
"you y'all" (Did I get that right you southerner's?) are doing all over.

I think "listening" in on conversations going on are very important to us
newbies.

It looks like we will be able to order our tanks the middle to end of
October. I'm so excited.....anyway, please, I beg you all not to take
anything to do with plants, water, fish, greenhouses....off line, we want to
eavesdrop!

Thanks!
Warmly,

There doesnt seem to be a distinction between using tilapia or shrimp or whales. Its all still aquaponics. Each person is going to have there faves how to feed how to harvest how to plant, the structure of your system. They all relate as we can, please all share your collectivly vast experience with each other. Us newbies for a start need that storehouse to get started without too much pain. Mark you were relating to coloidal silver for use in fish disease problems. I was wondering if Tom and Paula noticed any improvement in the health of their fish when they used the planters 2 rock dust. I believe that there is in that an amount of silver. I cant recall if it was in coloidal state or able to atain that state. What part the other minerals played also in the uptake of nutrition to atain a healthy state. Paula are you still using the planters 2 ?. Id like to know if you noticed or recorded a better growth rate of your fish after using it. I understood that you were getting upto 27% increase in plant growth? Thanks to you all for having this list as it takes all involved to have one. Conrad
