Cipro is the one on the news. It has been reserved (doctors requested
not to use it so it will have maximum impact with minimum dose). Course
it is god-awful-expensive. Trouble is its shelf life and misuse could
breed buggies we don't want around either.
Homeopathic Physicians use anthrax toxin for carbuncles so that would be
available itself and would be useful in humans or livestock. Also
Arsenicum recommended as excellent treatment and common. Since it is
also used in flu it is easy to get. Herbally, Echinacea is the key. Any
open wound can be helped with colloidal silver (physicians use it for
strep throat in their own kids).
My pharmacist mother went to a training at American Pharmaceutical
Association Convention last year. They were actively stockpiling for
outbreaks of Smallpox or Anthrax and discussion was on how to handle the
distribution and stocking for individual hospitals. Course, she only
went because it was so poorly attended it looked bad for the presenter
(she was a fellow presenter and sympathetic). Most didn't get the info
at all.
Peace,
Kathyann

During the past month or so that I have been on this list I have enjoyed the
"conversations" and learned much. I have also come to realize that there are
list members all over the world and some in my own "backyard".
Would it be appropriate to ask list members to identify their locations? I
am just curious about who is on the list and where they are located. There
is a real possibility that there are several list members within a
relatively close distance from me, and if so, I might like to visit them and
see their operations.
I live in east central North Carolina about 25 miles south of Raleigh, near
Angier. "Blue Ribbon Bert" who just won Best Of Show at the Virginia State
Fair for his Tilapia lives about 200 miles north of me in eastern Virginia.
He has invited me to drop in one day next week to see his operation, and I
am looking forward to the visit.
I am not suggesting that we identify our location with each posting to the
list. What I am suggesting is just a one time posting saying something like:
"I am John and I am located in eastern NC near Fishville."
One thought just occurred to me, is there a "roster" of the list members
that shows their locations? If there is, someone let me know where to find
it. I may have a neighbor on this list and not even know it.

We're getting ready to add our second pod to the greenhouse in the next
two weeks. Has the group established a means to order such large items
and get a "group rate"?
Tom and Paula were going to be able to get wholesale prices for us. At
least that's what I thought I read somewhere. True? or I haven't had my
morning coffee yet.
I'll be buying one poly tank. 8' diam. (holds about 800 gals)
one plant tray. 4'x8'x12"
If anyone else is getting ready to purchase these items, would it help
"the cause" if we ordered thru Tom and Paula and pursued the group
buying concept?
My biggest concern is shipping costs. With our last tank order, the
shipping was almost half the cost of the tank. It seems to me that
group ordering might double the shipping cost.

The leaf lettuce variety I tried in my plant tray doesn't like the
medium. I have two trays of seedlings looking for a place to grow. I
fed some of the seedlings to the tilapia and I'm potting the rest in
empty one gallon milk or orange juice containers. These work quite well
for the lettuce and, if you cut the top off and leave the handle, you
can hang them and save space.
Anyone else have an idea for free pots. The empty milk jugs and orange
juice containers were headed to the trash, so I consider them free. :)
I had more french fillet green bean seedlings than I had room for in the
plant tray. I'm feeding the extra to the tilapia. They eat the plant,
root and all. I know tomatoe plants are in the nightshade family and
shouldn't be fed to the fish. Any other vegetable plants I should avoid
feeding to the fish when the plant has finished producing crop?
God, I love my greenhouse.

The only way to save is to buy a bunch of them yourself and then install
them as you need them. This way you have some level of discount, plus you
only pay once for shipping. It will kill your savings account, though :-)

I'm getting some stripped bass and some crayfish to start up my small
system, but before I get them, what should I have on hand to feed them?
I saw something in Mother Earth News once that was a light bulb, a
vacuum cleaner and a pantyhose contraption. The person that built it
would turn it on at night, and bugs attracted to the light would get
sucked into the pantyhose. In the morning the power was shut off, and
the pile of bugs were dumped into the chicken coop for feed. Would
something like this work for cheap feed for fish?
Is there any worries about feeding crayfish scraps from dinner?

I just use a cheap kit from the pet store and the the state of Utah checks my water about 2 X a
year. I have a LaMotte kit for Oxygen and maybe should up grade for ammonia and nitrite but
keep defering that expence.

hw, you did not mention if you have a pond or fishtank or whatever...I read
where one should introduce the crayfish first to get established, then the
bass...a product called 'agri-lite' has units that use a black light to
attract insects, and a suction fan to collec such in any type of container,
first used in tobacco, we used it with our cotton fields with great success,
burlap bags full each day, using a car battery type in the field...some
units have zappers that shock the insects...doubt if much goes on in
winter...cowboy

Adriana - we grew primarily the Jade variety available from Johnny's Seeds.
They have a very distinctive color which adds to their appeal, I think.
Many of our local farmer's market customers are simply older people who
can't garden (physically) any more. But they still have their favorite
varieties that they hope to find at the market. Most market vendors were
selling a basket measure (probably 1/2 peck) of Blue Lake for $2.00, but in
full season(or at the end of the market day!) would give special buys on
bushel quantities. We sold our "gourmet" beans for $2.00 for a quart
ziplock bag....approximately 1/3 to 1/4 the quantity. Our "pricing battle"
was difficult with some customers, but we found our own niche buyers by
sampling and promoting them on visual appeal.
It was a very interesting "marketing experience." I will say that if you're
looking for a place to do market research for your local area, a farmers
market is a great way to do it. You'll find a good cross-section of your
local population, and have the opportunity to get good direct feedback on
your products, assuming you go every week.

Hi Will,
I'm just cruising the list tonight and waiting to get "Blasted". So far, I
haven't. Breathe a breath for me.
Sometimes I voice my opinion and it scares me to death, but "God help us
all", usually people agree with me.
How do I monitor this and that? I don't!! I have several hundreds of dollars
of equipment to monitor water parameters & I used to monitor it constantly.
Let your fish talk to you.
You don't need to monitor that crap. If the fish stop eating then you have a
problem. If you can't "see a dime at the bottom of the tank" as Paula says,
then you have a problem. If your growbeds get plugged then you have a
problem. It is ALWAYS water quality. Don't worry about things that you can't
see. Fix the things that you can see.
GOD!! I wish I had a jerk like me to correspond with when I first started
this. I could have avoided so many mistakes.

From: "STEVE SPRING"

Hi Gang,
This is "socially insensitive" Steve again.
Everyone is looking for a profitable product to grow. I hope none of you are
living in the Milwaukee area.
I was talking to a Philippino friend the other day and told her that she has
to tell me something that I can grow that the Philippinos would like. She
said, after awhile, "Steve, you should try Kang Kong." My obvious answer
was, "What is Kang Kong?"" She told me what it was and after a little bit of
effort, I found some in the local oriental market. I was able to buy some.
(It has to be imported from NY.) I put this "Kang Kong" in my grow beds
(S&S) and it is just going crazy.
Gee Whiz!! Wonder if there is a market for this? Has to be imported from
NY...huh? Sells for $3.00/lb when they can get it. I can grow this in my
growbeds and it grows like crazy. Makes you think huh?
(Pls. don't ask me for websites for Kang Kong. I've told you what to do.
Just check it out. Hint: Look under Philippino vegetables. Use:
www.dogpile.com . It is the best search engine there is. Lots of luck)
Niche market again. But, you have to talk to people...especially ethnic
people and find out what they would like and how you can help them obtain
it.
Just my thoughts. GO PACU & KANG KONG!!

Hi Gang,
Thanks to all of you who didn't blast me and especially to those of you who
supported me.
AMERICA needs to get back on track and this list does too. We need more
"inputs" and less "unsubscribes"
I'm trying a new venture with Pacu's, Parron Shark catfish & "kang kong".
Let's breathe some new life into our beloved list.
I always consider myself a newbie to this list. Pls., be like Will, ask
stupid questions......"no stupid questions...just.......you know the
rest..."
I, and I am sure the seniors on this list, ask the "newbies" to put us
"pro's"? to the test.
Thanks Ya'll..........Steve
