Thanks Paula, I haven't yet received my brochure from Mr. Johnson. If I
haven't received it by middle of next week, I will call him by phone.
By the way, how do I post a question or response to the list?
Thank you,

Steve,
Thank you for your quick reply. Money is not the overall issue , per se. We
have 22 acres in N.GA mtns I am trying to develop, (road, utitities, house,
training center...) Land is paid for, and we have some outside support and
savings. So, I am needing to be wise with spending, that's all. I am a
Pastor, with a church in NE AL mtns, about 45 miles south of Chattanooga.
Our ouutreach is to those society often labels as the least, lost, and
forgotten. The GA location, (we are on Lookout Mtn in GA-TN-AL corner) will
be a church and training center, hopefully inspiring and equipping
individuals and families to be more financially self-sufficient through
family-based initiatives. The aquaponics project is but one. My family
specializes in milling and baking. So we will have a bakery, etc.
Chattanooga will be our population center for wholesaling and retailing.
Conference in N.C. will be good introduction for me. I have already decided
to be there. Waiting for my brochure in the mail right now! Thanks for your
encouragement! I love the thread, and when I get behind for a few days,
instead of deleting everything, I painstakeningly read every one - this is a
good education in itself.

Bob,
Welcome to the list. You'll find the people who post here are wonderful
about helping newbies.
My suggestion to you would be to start small, but save money and room
for expansion. We started with one tank, one plant tray and one
bio-filter. That was last spring. We've had this time for some
hands-on learning with the system and we've had this list to ask
questions when problems arose. We're now ready to add more tanks and
plant trays, as we are confident that the success we've had so far can
be sustained and repeated.
Get Tom and Paula's package, if you haven't already. You will tend to
develop your own design with time, but their design is a great starting
point from which you can individualize as your needs require.
My last suggestion is to research all the permits your state is going to
require. It is easier to change your design before you execute it than
it is to try and make an existing system conform to requirements after
the fact. You are on a mountain so flood zone shouldn't be a problem.
Best of luck to you. I think it is wonderful that you will some day be
teaching other people how to grow their own food.

Well, after careful consideration I've decided to confront my phobia
(messagepostophobia) and send something to post with you fine folks. I
think that I have been subscribed to this list for about oh maybe 2 years
now but do not recall ever posting anything. My name is Kevin Rhoades and
I live in La Mesa, CA (San Diego area). I am very interested in Aquaponics
and have been given the elusive 'green light' (spousal agreement) to build
a system. I am actively planning and collecting information on the pieces
needed and will be looking for fish in the mar-april 2002 time frame. I'm
thinking of either Tilapia or Catfish, but Steve S. sounds very happy with
his Pacu so maybe they would be another option. This system will be
integrated into the back yard landscaping design and the greenhouse/covers
will probably be removable (pretty small starter system) as weather here
never gets really severe as it does with many of the folks on this list. I
would also like to include a separate small pond for Duckweed and Red Claw
Crayfish. I plan to use a large photovoltaic panel to generate the
electricity needed for the system because of the power problems here in
So.Cal. For control of the system (temp monitoring, pumps, alarms, etc.) I
will use a homebuilt microcontroller board (I am an electronics engineering
tech.).
I would also like to thank all of the experienced people out there that
take the time to post valuable info that we newbies need to provide us with
the courage and motivation to actually do something.
It's about time to use up some of those frequent flyer miles so I will be
attending the course in N.C. next month (also anxiously awaiting the brochure).
Cheers, ...K.R...
p.s. - that didn't hurt a bit now did it?

There is a 40' x100' greenhouse available about 20 miles from here. It
is to be moved. All the heating and cooling equipment is included for a
price of $8000. Can someone tell me if this is a reasonable price? It was
previously used for growing tomatoes. It has a pipe-frame structure with
wood frame-lexan end walls and is covered with inflated poly. It has 3'
side walls.

The first time I read about aquaponics I learned about a very different
model from the S & S model. This one had an in-ground vee-shaped fish tank
(actually a poly-lined trench) that ran down the middle of the entire length
of the greenhouse. Tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers were grown in
ground-level, sand-filled beds along either side. Fish wastes that
collected in the vee were pumped out onto the grow beds.
This model seems like it would have a much lower set-up cost than the S
& S model. I'm sure many of you know something about this model developed
by North Carolina State University in the early days of aquaponics research.
Why is this model no longer popular?

Miriam, have you checked the price of new? How old is the unit, the plastic
will more than likely have to be replaced, if the item is half price or
more, better to buy new...value depends upon your need...10-20% of value
would be reasonable...you will have removal costs, and transportation costs
also...cowboy

Way too high in my opinion. You can almost get a new one for that.
And if it hasn't been disassembled the labor is considerable.
Stay away from 3' side walls - they are awful to work around - 5-6' is
much, much better.

If you could get the price down to $4000.00 it would be ok. As you take it
down many parts become damaged lost or will not go back together with out
forcing it. Unless you are very short the sidewalls are a problem us loose a
lot of usable space.

Though it will add a little more cost a short knee wall could solve the short
side wall problem.

Which type kang kong are you growing? The kind that grows in wet ground or the aquatic type
that grows in shallow water.
I have been playing with one bed that has about 3 inches of water over about 3 inches of pea
gravel. It grows really nice water cress. and the pink Kissers and gold fish init seem to to
better than in the big tank.

Miriam, Where in Kansas are you? I live in Ponca City, which is North
Central Oklahoma, so we can't be too far from each other.
I've been working on an S&S style system (Hi Paula remember me?) for the
last couple of years, whenever I've had the time and money, and all the
while I've been lurking on this list. The information on this list is
overwelming. (I know more about sod yurts than I ever thought possible)
I've finally got a system up and running and the results are tremendous.
Maybe we can get together sometime for a fish fry.

Has anyone had luck using lava rock for bed media?
I am considering it as it is light and cheap.
I know people use it for ground cover in gardens so im sure the plants won't
mind it. As long as it doesn't mess with water retention or the
fish/bacteria I would assume all is well.
Thanks

Thats a very simple system. Is that just standing water in those beds or is it circulated some
how. And are the Pink Kissers, kissing Gouramis.
